Default Tokyo Godfathers (2003) - June 2, 2020

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086G2ZCN4...es-tv&sr=1-437

Quote:
"With its masterful grasp of comedy, pathos, social commentary and mystical weirdness, Tokyo Godfathers takes anime to a whole new level." – Ken Eisner, Variety In modern-day Tokyo, three homeless peoples lives are changed forever when they discover a baby girl at a garbage dump on Christmas Eve. As the New Year fast approaches, these three forgotten members of society band together to solve the mystery of the abandoned child and the fate of her parents. Along the way, encounters with seemingly unrelated events and people force them to confront their own haunted pasts, as they learn to face their future, together. Heartbreaking, hilarious and highly original, Tokyo Godfathers is a humanist masterpiece from the legendary director Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Perfect Blue), and a tale of hope and redemption in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

I wonder what the included "short film" is. My guess would be "Good Morning", from the Ani*Kuri15 anthology.

Finally, it was only a matter of time. This will go into my Satoshi Kon collection.

Totally marvelous news. So, unlike all the other BDs released so far, this is from a new 4k scan........... (at least Amazon says so). Just awesome, man.

It'll probably look nearly identical to the previous BDs. Why? The movie was digitally composited then printed onto 35mm film, and that 35mm film is now scanned at 4K. Being from 2003, the digital to print technology wasn't great, and the current BDs prove it- they look really bad.

And before anyone asks, the original digital files probably don't exist anymore. If they did, it wouldn't be marketed as a "4K scan."

Really excited for this as it completes my Kon film collection.
Looking forward to Funimations (ugh) release of Paranoia Agent.
Hopefully Paprika gets a re-release of the sorts.

I need this and Perfect Blue on Blu-Ray. Heck he only made 4 films and I already have Paprika and Millenium Actress. Those 2 are modern day Classics. I say that because they're from the 2000+ years.

Is this as good as his other movies? I’m not sure if I never saw it (I feel like I did) or if it was that forgettable

It's absolutely excellent. Some prefer it to Perfect Blue. Personally it's one of my all-time favorites.

A bit more conventional and melodramatic than his other work, but still a very good film well worth checking out.

I've always said that Millennium Actress is his best.
But all his films were unique in their own ways.

A Trailer. The Dub sounds great to me, so much character, love the style.

John Ford influence. Christianity/Christmas in a different culture? Sounds new and very interesting to me. Seems like it almost takes off Where Rashomon ended, but set in Tokyo and a different timeline, not a small village. But my mind is different than others.

When Tokyo Godfathers scrolls across at the end credit of this trailer I'm like...did he watch Goodfellas? Yes I think he did or his editor or someone.

Goodfellas intro...I like noticing similarities and nods to classics. So the fact that it's JohnFord, Kurosawa, and Scorsese in style or homage or reference has me. That's what I like anyway. Intentional or not I see it all as intentional, but that's what happens when you get into a movie like The Shining when your 13, and get hooked on films.

The biggest reason to own this release is the special features, having the Ohayo short available in HD on disc is great and there’s a short making-of it available too. It also has a variety of vintage featurettes totaling over an hour. Some new content includes a introduction and interview with the English dub actor for Hana, which is neat because they chose a real transwoman to voice her, and while I prefer to watch it dubbed I skimmed thru the new dub and it’s more than decent.

The video transfer looks ok to me. For a 4K remaster the film looks pretty soft but I think it does the animation justice. It’s more “filmic” than the Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress remasters for sure.
