Germany The Night Porter 4K UHD (1974)

Coming from Wicked Vision.

Quote:
Dear visioneers,

on this beautiful Friday evening we turn to you with a very special announcement. This summer, in collaboration with Weltkino, we will release the classic film THE NIGHT PORTER as a German DVD, Blu-ray and for the first time worldwide UHD premiere. Experience Liliana Cavanis groundbreaking masterpiece as a strictly limited 3-disc deluxe edition with partly brand new and exclusive bonus material.

THE NIGHT PORTER made leading actress Charlotte Rampling (ANGLE HEART, RED SPARROW) a global star overnight and depicts the sadomasochistic relationship of a concentration camp survivor with her former SS tormentor. When the film was released in the summer of 1974, Italian prosecutors declared it immoral. The copies were confiscated, and the film was banned by the censors. The film industry then organized a one-day strike. Several directors, including Luchino Visconti, lobbied for the film's release. It was finally declared to be a work of art in a court case.

More info about the set will follow shortly.

Dirk Bogarde has entered 4K!

Never seen this. But have been curious.

This could be a color timed disaster

I really need to see screenshots before ever purchasing this.

Hoping for the best

Yeah I’m in the same boat. It’s fascinating material but I don’t think the movie ever really “gets there.” An interesting curiosity but not something I feel much of a need to revisit.

The new Blu that came out looks like issues from HDR to SDR conversion, so here's hoping the actual source doesn't look a mess. 2001's new Blu had a similar issue with a lot of blue being places it really wasn't.

personally I'd be more excited if this was "The Damned" or "Death in Venice"

What makes you think that? The 4K scanning was done in Italy in SDR not in HDR. Unfortunately. But there is a strong green cast in the image. This has now been removed by Wicked. The UHD remains SDR. There will be no conversion. Better this way than faulty HDR.

Wow!

This coming out on UHD is about as big a surprise as I can remember for the format.

Films haven't been transferred 'in SDR' for over a decade. Yet another label cutting corners and making excuses?

What do you mean removed?! Is there any further info on what they are or aren't doing? The prior transfers that I know of were approved by the director, and the film is supposed to be accentuating the greens/grays/browns. I hope this is not to be messed with by a label that thinks they know better.

A lack of HDR grading is fine; this is a film from 1974 after all, and its release prints at the time very likely didn't have a dynamic range that exceeded SDR. Adding fake HDR effects would lead to the opposite of restoration/preservation. The only thing that might hurt a little here is the downconversion to Rec.709.

No, the HDR PQ curve is much better suited to reproducing 35mm images in a digital space. That's why it's part of the spec.

If you were to give a percentage of how much better, what would it be?

If an SDR release doesn't look any better than a faulty HDR release I'd take neither tbh.

And to answer your question, the highlights have that blown out blue/green cast which is typical of bad SDR conversions from an HDR source. Maybe the scan just wasn't handled well? If the issue can be alleviated then good on them. For now I'm gonna be cautious and hold out.
