Just came here to post about this. One of Sammo's better post-Harvest vehicles. Hope the Blu is good.

Is this worth a blind buy if you're a Sammo Hung fan?

Well, this is disappointing. It's apparently a 1080i25 release. People in Europe won't have issues playing it. People in North America may wish to ensure that their playback gear can handle the disc.

So basically Region B viewers would have no problems while Region A would?

It's the old PAL/NTSC again.
You need to be sure your hardware can handle PAL signals.

Region B and PAL regions do not overlap 100%.

I saw a picture of the back cover on Amazon and it is indeed labeled 1080i.

I know my computer should still be able to play it, but it's still inferior than 1080p24

EDITED: Corrected mistakes in this post made by my damn phone or tablet. Those devices love to make me look like right loon.

Ok, this bluray was very disappointing. It appears to be an HD scan of a horse shit quality/condition English print. Had the same bad characteristics as the UK dvd print by Soul Blade. Obviously this HD scan makes the film print look slightly better than the dvd but it's far from what you'd expect when you hand your money over for a remastered edition Bluray release of well known cult classic Sammo film from the 90s.

It's not far off being an upscale of the crappy UK dvd . But I don't think it actually is an upscale. Either way, not impressed. Original mono is the same not great quality source as the dvd also was. Subtitles/translation are a tad better than they were on the DVD, which were atrocious in several ways. But these subs on television BD use some very rarely used English words abe the translation I would say were based off a mandarin script as opposed to the Cantonese they're speaking. Don't hurry out to get this release. Hopefully a better job can be done in the future using a negative as te source and some colour correction and clean up of scratches etc....

Final thought- Is it worth getting for the picture quality improvement, supposed high definition restoration? = Not really.
Is it worth getting to follow the characters' plot and jokes a bit more ? Yes the subtitles are a tad better but far from a proper translation. This film clearly needs 88Films or eureka!'s help .

I Liiiiiiike

Arggghm sorry about that. It's because I was using either my phone or tablet to type that out, and typing too fast. It will not stop changing words on me, for no apparent reason! It happens all the time and totally ruins the large messages I'd spent ages typing out.

Does nobody else's device do that? Just changes the word you typed into a completely different word and/or will change the punctuation or adds random nonsense onto the end of a short sentence or word. I think the dictionaries in these apps have been taught a load of junk somehow and Id love to restart my dictionaries for my tablet and phone messenger and whatsapp? back to how they were when I first got them.

If this happens again, don't be afraid to point it out guys, so I can fix it. I want my sentences to be comprehensible.

I'm gonna go back and edit that message now,for any future visitors.

I rented the Soulblade DVD for my first viewing of the film (an okay one, wasn't brilliant). Oh boy, sub-par image quality and subtitles indeed (not to mention at least one glitch at 52:48). I could have forgiven the video if it was the only source available; less so the subtitles.

Is this Blu-ray 85 minutes, or is it a typo on the packaging? There is an online rip of 25 FPS, but is it the same master as the Blu-ray? If so, I'd say the visual's better than suggested (though still DVNR, false positive clean, and over-bright). However, it is cut by nearly six minutes. I'd be able to verify if someone could provide the Blu-ray. DVDCompare states 83:33 (not sure if that's correct?), though the online rip would be 87:07 when converted to 23.976. Soulblade is 1:29:14 (PAL), but 1:33:03 when converted to 23.976.

Anyway, hopefully a raw master is available to licensees so it can be restored again to a higher standard. That said, I wonder who the licensor of this film is.

I wonder if the Hong Kong DVD (mentioned here) is the same master used by Soulblade?
