Default Best Buy package home theatre

i have about $1500 to spend on a home theater system to replace an RCA 5.1system i bought for about $350 6 or 7 years ago. Best Buy is offering 3 items in a $1600 bundle. i despise shopping.

what do you think? I have a sony bds300 player and a sharp 37 inch hdtv. will it really sound good or is my money better spent somewhere else? will it sound substantially better than what i have?

I was looking at this sale this morning in the newspaper ad. It looks good, nice receiver and nice Mirage speakers...only issue I would have is the subwoofer.

8" is a small sub. My own personal preference is at least 12". But maybe you could sell the 8" sub on ebay?

other than that I think that bestbuy package is pretty sweet.

I personally can't stand mirage. I think that their speakers suck and are overrated. They don't sound very good and their imaging is awful. I would much rather get some Monitor Audio speakers with some sort of receiver and 10 or 12" sub. that is just my personal opinion

If Best Buy has a 10" or 12" sub they will usually let you upgrade. If they say they can't. have them ring up the package, delete the 8" and substitute a larger one. The computer will probably allow the package discount.
It worked for me on my first system.

yeah I know people like the sound of them. I just would be careful about where their imaging is.

I would go with an Onkyo 705 or 805 and start buying speakers 1 by 1 to make your set up.

I'm not sure that buying speakers 1 by 1 is the best way to do it. Some speakers might not go well with others...

Anyway, the best way to do it is to try them at your home and return them if you're not satisfied with the sound. (it would also help to try other speakers to compare but then you'll have a great time returning the ones that you don't like!)

Get an Onkyo TX-SR605. Similar specs but the Onkyo does a great job with high-def audio. Next get a SVS/HSU sub, maybe SVS PB10nsd. Both should run you around $800. Speakers are relative to listening tastes but you should start with a nice receiver and sub.

If there's a Frys near you they have a Complete 7.1 system for $1499. It includes the Onkyo TX-SR605, Onkyo CD\DVD Changer and a Polk Audio 7.1 speaker setup with a 12" sub.

Don't cut corners on your sub. A SVS/HSU 10" will manhandle most mass-produced 12" subs.

The Marantz SR-5002 with HDMI switching (1.3), Audyssey room eq http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo...umber=MASR5002 for $749.00 and a Polk Audio system consisting of six R150 (Front,Side,Rear)99.00 a pair, 1 Polk CSR (center)99.00, add 1 PSW10 199.00 (polk system over 499 gets free PSW10) subwoofer get one free. Total 7.2 (two powered subs)system for $1344.00 with a little cabbage to spare. (Polk system at www.crutchfield.com not packaged together, I spec'd it out).

The system that I've put together will sound a lot better than your RCA setup. Mind you - I designed this to get you into the best you can get with your money...NOW. Eventually I would like to see you move into higher-end speakers. I'm a vintage speaker guy, classic Infinity when Arnie was till in charge - Classic Snell when Peter was alive, ect. I've designed some great systems in my day - but I'm well known for dealing with lower budgets. Shop your speakers - but I believe if you've been listening to RCA's this long...You will think you are in audio heaven with my recommended setup. One day you will be ready to put down the cabbage on B&W, Thiel, or Martin Logan, but for now - I think you will enjoy this system. (If I'm not mistaken the Polks have key holes for wall mounting - and two subs - kills standing waves and other problems - I'm actually and avocate for a sub on every channel)!
