Default Rank the Resident Evil games

Hopefully this is OK to post here, i wasn't really sure where else would be appropriate and this forum gets the most traffic as far as gaming is concerned.

What is your personal preferred ranking for the Resident Evil games? I must admit, I've not played them all, but i have played quite a few of them.

Only the first one on PS1 really had an impact on me. It seemed so unique at the time and cinematic with the full-motion video scenes, eery soundtrack, etc. it also helped that survival horror was probably in its infancy and so it just seemed like a fresh concept in general. The whole zombie craze wasn't yet overdone, either. It was a fairly 'scary' game to play late at night in the dark with a decent stereo system. I only had the first three games, but the first one was by far the one with the most nostalgia, anyway.

I’ll count the remakes with the originals to make the list easier

S Tier (10/10)
- 2 (the REmake is a masterpiece, but the original will never be topped for me)
- 1 (I love the REmake more than the original, but the DS version of the original with the QoL changes is also a great way to play this masterpiece)

A+ Tier (9.5/10) (these are interchangeable)
- 8
- 7
- 4

B Tier (7-8/10)
- 5 (this could go higher, really grew on me)
- 3 (the remake was half assed, that’s why it’s this low)
- Revelations 2
- Revelations

Meh Tier
- 6

Haven’t played Zero, also no recollection of Code Veronica, but I remember it being fine

1. Resident Evil 2
2. Resident Evil
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Resident Evil 7
5. Resident Evil 8
6. Resident Evil 3
7. Resident Evil 0
8. Resident Evil CV
9. Resident Evil 5
10. Resident Evil 6

CV is highly overrated/overpraised imo. Dumb story (even for RE standards), the worst character in the franchise (Steve), and one of the worst main antagonists in the series.

Interesting question. What would your ranking be?

I haven't played RE6, but did play the demo of RE8.
For the remakes, I only played the demos of RE1 and 2, RE3, RE4.

RE2 PS1 is my favorite and the one I remember the most, completing the game only 1 time. Some tough enemies/bosses. Good story.
RE Revelations
RE3
RE1
RE4
RE7
RE Code Vernonica
RE5 For some reason, this felt like the controls were really bad and clunky more than usual. I tried getting into the game but lost interest.

The games really shifted going first person only in 7 and 8. They then went back and added 3rd person views in DLC, updates. That just makes it seem like they were releasing an incomplete game by adding in what should've been there as an option in the release version.

Or maybe they really wanted to shake things up with the first person view, which was a bit more tense and especially tense in RE7 VR. It seemed real enough that I didn't want to keep playing that game, stuck in that house with that lunatic Father character busting through walls after the player.

5. Resident Evil 5
6. Resident Evil 4
7. Resident Evil 6

8. Resident Evil Zero
9. Resident Evil 1

I just included the main series and only up to 6 which is the last one I completed

RE3 used to be my fave in the series but decades removed, RE2 is objectively a better game. They were interchangeably for me. CV is a very close third and represent what RE means to me. I appreciate Remake for modernizing the clunky original, which is difficult to revisit

RE4, 5 and 6 represent its own trilogy of sorts. Ive always found RE4 to be the most overrated game in videogame history. I much preferred 5 over it. On the flipside I do think 6 is underrated. Its not a bad game and what it does, I think it does well.

Zero....wasnt a fan of eliminating item boxes. It was cool as a supplement to the original but doesnt reach the heights of the other games. Speaking of the original, I appreciate it for creating the series but itsa hard game to revisit. Had Remake not existed, I may have ranked this higher but it does and that improved things in every way.

Split my list into tiers:

1) REmake
2) RE4 (original)
3) RE2 (original)

4) Code Veronica
5) RE7
6) RE2 Remake
7) RE4 Remake

8) RE3 (original)
9) RE3 Remake
10) RE8

11) RE0 (gets its own tier to save it from the bottom since the train section is pretty awesome)

12) RE5
13) RE6
14) Revelations 1/2

All in all a pretty great series. I'd say everything in the Top 10 are really good, with many of the games making my all-time favorites. Only thing keeping Code Veronica from being a top tier game for me is the hideous story, which is poor even by RE's admittedly low standards. But I love the setting, atmosphere, and old school gameplay in that one.

I think there's a huge drop in quality after the third tier. Wasn't sure if I'd include Revelations but I recently played both games so they were fresh in my mind. They were both bad, but Rev2 was especially terrible.

You were able to persist with the game where I lost interest after the controls were a barrier to my gameplay preference against zombies. It's playable, but was very clunky more than I was expecting for the 5th game in the series. That was on my 360, so when that console gave out enough times, I never went back to RE5.

What are some of your favorite things about RE5?

I think my ranking for the ones i've played would be as below. I loved Code Veronica when i played it on the Dreamcast almost 25 years ago but haven't played it properly since. I downloaded it for the PS4 but the tank controls were pretty jarring to get used to again!

1. Resident Evil 2 (remake)
2. Resident Evil
3. Resident Evil 4 (remake)
4. Resident Evil 3 (remake)
5. Resident Evil 8: Village
6. Resident Evil 8: Biohazard
7. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
8. Resident Evil 0
9. Resident Evil 5

I only played a few minutes of 6. Hoping they remake 5 and 6 at some point. Haven't played Revelations.

The RE4 remake put me in an action RE mode, so I’m going to play 5 with an open mind after beating Yakuza 7, hopefully it finally clicks with me

I stopped gaming in the ps2/gamecube gen, so blind bought RE5 when I first got a ps3, with no trailer or even playing 4, and going from 2 and 3 to that.. was shocking to say the least lol

I think RE5 maybe gets a bad rep because 4 was pretty damn good in the story front. It's similar to the RE2 versus RE3 situation imo.

RE1 at the time of its original release was something that made me scared of zombies because i was a kid when it first came out, but by Code Veronica i faced it more head on. That said, i can't recall fully finishing any of the games tbh.

If i do play now, i prefer cranking up the brightness for more visibility. No scare jumps FTW

I think you do have to split the series a bit by generations and even account for the updated controls and stuff with the Remakes out there. I just never really played a full game of RE since they switched to 1st person tbh.

I agree. RE7 is my favourite purely down to the whole VR experience. Something I will never forget. Just trying to sneak through that kitchen knowing that guy is nearby was nerve wracking!
Love the part with the birthday puzzle as well, the whole family gave off Texas Chainsaw vibes.

Love 1,3,4 and 8 also.

It's been a while since i have played, but wasn't there an AI that basically had the 2nd character there like an NPC and you could switch between the two when you had to quickly do something to each characters strength? I also think they carried this into RE6 if i remember right.

Personally i didn't find it all that bad in RE5 and although i say i never finished an RE game, i actually think 5 is the only one i did finish lol

Good to seee, thanks Levcore. Yes, 5 is next on their list of games to remake. That could benefit with new controls IMO. Just to be able to be skilled enough of an agent for walking and firing at the same time would be good to see added to the game.

Yeah, RE7 in VR is a totally more intense game than in 2D. I am surprised by the difference in immersion for that one. The stereo 3D visuals and connection to the headset where you look around in real time really adds a lot to the intensity of that game.
RE8, that would be something too on PSVR2.
