Amazon.com now has this warning about the HD DVD version of Planet Earth:
"This is high-definition disc. Unless it is described as a "combo" disc, it will only play in an HD DVD player." At Christmas they did not have any warning that a DVD player could not play it. |

Well thats the problem, you give new technology the same or similar name as its predecessor and its going to cause market confusion. I worked in HMV in the UK when both formats were released and had to tell many a customer the difference between a DVD & HD DVD.

how many people purchased a BD thinking that it would play in their DVD player in contrast to people purchasing a HD DVD thinking it would play in their DVD player?.. they address the side that would have much less confusion....and leave the other side empty.... were they looking for a headache or what?... |

actually hd dvd was probably in the negatives for this week, however since the system can't compute how a product could possibly sell less than 0 (admit it, hd dvd has to be one of the few products to achieve this feat without having a recall, how sh1tty is your product when it manages to sell less than 0), it simply gets rounded up to 0, when in fact it was in negative numbers for the week. |

"I purchased the Planet Earth dvd hd and attempted to play it on three new dvd hd players. It did not work on any of them! I returned it for another, and the second one is also defective. So far, I have not been able to view which I understand to be an incredible dvd." "Thanks to Amazon's pathetic scheme, I now own an HD DVD format piece of plastic. It was very deceiving of them to have the HD formatted DVD as the first choice in a search on this series. So I'm out almost $80 because I took the plastic off... I now know that an HD DVD is not only a different format, but is being compared to laserdiscs, so don't bother buying this version of Planet Earth or an HD DVD player for that matter." "I bought this disk for my boyfriend who raved about the series after seeing it from a friend. He has a brand new blue ray dvd player, plus a brand new 52 inch plasma tv at his house. Yet somehow this disc doesn't play. We tried it on my simple dvd player and it for sure didn't work there either. So before buying this make sure you have the correct equipment. I'm returning this as "it is not fully compatible with my existing system" I'm nor sure whose system it is compatible with however." "Unfortunatley, when I received the 4 DVD's they did not work. Major disappontment since they were a gift. The person I sent Planet Earth invited people over to view the cd's .... no luck. Plus, it ended a nice planned evening. Still trying to figure out how to return the cd's with limited hassle. " "I was looking forward to this series and ordered the high definition set. We have a high def tv but not a high def dvd. I thought it would work any way but it did not. I then gave the set to my son-in-law because they have a high def dvd. He could not get it to work either and so the whole set is useless. I think there should have been some sort of highlighted explaination as to what would work on all the dvd's out there. Now the set is useless and I am not happy." "We must be technologically behind, I guess, because we were unable to view this HD DVD on any of our DVD players. In full disclosure, we only have one HD DVD player in the house, but it still didn't work there. The most unfortuneate aspect is that we gave the set as a gift to my dad for Father's Day, and he couldn't even view it!! He also has a (fairly new) HD DVD player. Inside the box there is a little note about going online to your player's manufacturer's website and finding out about available software upgrades for your player, so that you can view these DVDs "created using the latest technology". I wish I would have known this when I was purchasing, I would have just ordered the regular (non-HD) version." "Real rating is a minus 30! I was unable to access the DVD on ANY player! I took it to Best Buy, and they said it will not work in any player they have in stock and are unable to program any player to play the DVD. It was a total waste of money and a horrible experience with Amazon because they will not help in any way to correct the problem." "I'm sure the High Def version is great for something like this... However, I bought it only to find that it didn't work with most of the players I had. It wouldn't play on XBOX, Playstation 3, or a regular DVD player. So only buy this if you know it works with your player, and know that you don't have the option of using it with anything else (reg DVD player)." "I ordered this series for father's day gifts. I have yet to see it. I am now learning what hd dvd means. I hope to get the regular version soon. Ordered three and no one can watch it" "I thought since I have a high def TV that this would work but apparently you have to have a high def DVD player to play this dvd. I couldn't use or play this so I had to return it. I will be buying the regular dvd though." "CNET rated my new Oppo DV-981HD the best HD DVD player. It won't load my HD DVD Planet Earth I bought here at Amazon. How is this possible? (The TV is a Pioneer 1080p plasma)" anybody else wondering why Planet Earth HD DVD was so high on the amazon charts for sooooooo long now. guess not. this clears things up. normal j6p was getting screwed over Toshiba's misleading name and tactics. I swear that at least 5% of all HD DVD purchases have been by mistake. When we are talking about them selling 4 million discs, thats something like 200,000 discs HD DVD has sold to uninformed consumers, that resulted in nothing more than a 1 time mix up. I really want to e-mail some of those people and tell them they're idiots. Plain and Simple. Complete Morons. And those people that invited people over to watch Planet Earth, must be fun loving people, especially since having it not work "ruined a nicely planned evening"....i hate it when people plan anything, i want to go *censored by poster*.....yeah

It's about time! Especially since by all accounts this was a bigger problem with HD DVD than Blu-ray. |

simple as this... make sure you know what you're buying before you buy it... I don't remember the last time i just bought something for the hell of it, not thinking about the future of the object. Speaking of planet earth, its been in my blockbuster Que for a month now with "very long wait" still attached!!! along with all the other blu movies i have in there. I'm about sick of blockbuster online and the pathetic excuse of blu ray stock they have!
