Default Bitter Moon (1992)

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...ostcount=28279

Quote:
Legendary filmmaker Roman Polanski (Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion) explores the sexy side of obsession and the wild side of romance in this outrageous look at the dark side of love. Starring Peter Coyote (Heart of Midnight), Emmanuelle Seigner (Frantic), Hugh Grant (Notting Hill) and Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient). A mild-mannered man (Grant) attempts to rekindle the sexual fire in his marriage while on a cruise, but he develops an irresistible infatuation with an eccentric paraplegic’s wife (Seigner). Offbeat and original, this voyage of wild obsession puts a whole new twist on the concept of marital bliss. Featuring dazzling performances and nasty comic moments, Bitter Moon is a hilarious walk on the wild side. Stunningly shot by Tonino Delli Colli (Once Upon a Time in America) with a beautiful score by Vangelis (Blade Runner). Co-starring Victor Banerjee (A Passage to India).

Special Features:
-NEW Interview with star Peter Coyote
-NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian Troy Howarth
-Theatrical Trailer

After the whole thing with Polanski getting dragged up again, it was up in the air whether any US or UK label would release any of his movies.

Good news.
I agree BITTER MOON is brilliant.
Polanski's directed several important films that need blu-rays in the U.S.

Excellent news here! I hope this will improve on the Japanese disc I have.

This is (or at least was in the DVD era) a New Line title released through Warners. This bodes well for DEATH AND THE MAIDEN, one of my favorite Polanski films, which was also a New Line title.

I'm 99.9999999% sure there entire film is in nothing but English. I wondered the same thing before buying the ancient Japanese BD I have, and I remember being relieved when watching it.

I agree, I've given up hope of Criterion revisiting KNIFE IN THE WATER, or even getting to THE TENANT or THE PIANIST at all. Shame.

I do think part of the problem with the reception of this film in the US comes down to its American title.

The French title LUNES DE FIEL (moon of bile, apparently) is a play on "lune de miel" (honeymoon). The fact that only two letters are changed makes it pretty clear it's a pun.

However, I'll admit, maybe I'm an idiot, but it was YEARS and YEARS before I realized BITTER MOON was supposed to be a play on "honeymoon," and I only realized this when I read about the French title, because the two English terms look so completely different.

The French title instantly gives a sense of the tone and mischievous nature of the film, but I think the American title just sounds meaningless.

The French title puts the film into perspective, doesn't it. Thanks for
pointing this out.

I've bought region B blu-rays of Pirates, The Pianist and Oliver Twist.

I have no hope of seeing The Fearless Vampire Killers or The Tenant
on blu-ray anytime soon, considering WB and Paramount control them.

Death and the Maiden is still unavailable on blu-ray. An actress friend
of mine who saw the play on Broadway and who knows the playwright
loved it and praised Polanski for finding a simple solution to plotting
problems that the play was criticized for. Polanski is a brilliant scene
mechanic even to those scripts he does not write.

Knife In the Water is on blu-ray in the U.K.
Venus In Fur is available on blu-ray in the U.K. region B in English.

Unpopular opinion time: this is one of Polanski's three greatest films.

Can't wait to get rid of my old R2 DVD.

I agree. I haven't actually read the play (I should), but I read about Polanski's changes, and it seems he subtly improved it quite a bit, especially the ending.

I recommend this documentary:

it clears up a lot of confusion.

Another good documentary is Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired only available on DVD:

Personally, besides Bitter Moon, I hold Chinatown and The Tragedy of Macbeth in the highest regard.
No shortage of admiration for Repulsion, The Ghost Writer, Venus in Furs, Oliver Twist, and The Pianist, though.
