Magnolia Pictures will finally be releasing Hirokazu Kore-eda's Shoplifters (万引き家族 / Manbiki Kazoku) on Blu-ray on April 1st. This will be a MOD-distributed release, but appears to be pressed.

Not that exciting given this is one they obviously should have done when the film came out given its one of their highest grossing releases and got all the awards but very interesting to imagine they might be looping back to some of their other library titles via pressed MOD - there’s quite a bit of great stuff that don’t have English-friendly Blu-rays. Cross fingers!

At this point, they should have just licensed it to Criterion for a 4K release. We'd get some new extras too at least.

I mentioned it in the Partner Label thread awhile ago when Magnolia was revealed as a partner label and Justin said he would like to release this. Still, not taking any chances. As long as this is pressed, it's good enough for me. Been waiting too long.

Curious if Magnolia will be doing this for other films as well in terms of MOD. They also have I Wish from Kore-eda and I know there are a decent amount of titles they have released on DVD only.

MovieZyng lists 2 other titles coming from them but more recent. Joyride (2022) and Deliver Us (2023). Still, it's a hopeful sign that they'll start digging into their catalog for releases.

Interesting. Wonder why they went the MOD route so soon after creating a new partnership with OCN? At the end of the day, what matters is that these films are coming out period, but again I would have imagined OCN would have been the way they would have gone.

The Hong Kong blu ray sold out really dangerous fast back in the day. Glad to see this finally getting released on blu ray.

Just confirmed by Justin from OCN that there will NOT be a better OCN edition so this is the only option. Again, I'm fine with this as at least it's pressed and has the movie.

Watched the film again recently and still find it to be top tier so I'm happy to see it finally get a release.

I still don't understand why Magnolia decided to release this as DVD only until now? Made no sense to me as this feels more of a film hard core film enthusiast would enjoy in HD versus some casual shopper at Wal-Mart.

Either way, Magnolia has earned some respect points for finally doing it.

I just saw this! I assume the wait was for a Criterion, but no, Magnolia just drops it on Blu. That's weird. Oh well getting it!

Magnolia has an enormous catalog of DVD only releases. It's my biggest complaint about them. They're still running the place like it's 2006.
