It's definitely a classic comedy - I grew up loving it - but looking forward to all the cries of racism in today's PC era. I mean, the movie is about rich white people buying (and owning) a black man... so I'm sure all those who still haven't gotten past slavery will again have a field day. Maybe the anti-Birth Of A Nation people will find this thread...

Toy BD_loc_{8889b798-1028-4ea9-5849-be868434ce08}.jpg

Synopsis: For the first time in motion picture history, the outrageous talent of Richard Pryor and the ingenious comedic sense of Jackie Gleason are combined in the same film. Gleason is U.S. Bates, a megalomaniac millionaire who owns most of south central Louisiana. Pryor is Jack Brown, a former journalist who has worked his way down the vocational ladder to the position of janitor in Bates' department store. Among Bates' other vast holdings is a young son Eric (Scott Schwartz), who visits his father for one week a year. Typically, Eric is chauffeured to the department store after-hours to pick out anything he wants. This time, Eric has a more elaborate toy in mind —Jack Brown. So begins the unique relationship that teaches Eric more about life than fun and games.

Cast: Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason, Ned Beatty, Scott Schwartz

I have not seen that movie since I was a kid. I can barely remember what happens in that movie.

I still find it funny that that kid went on to have a career in the porn industry.

Nice to see some films w/ Jackie Gleason on blu, still need Smokey and the Bandit and the Classic 39 Honeymooners episodes (I'd love Criterion to release that one since they do get the occasional Paramount release!)

"Mr. Brown, this is Master Bates."

(Me, I still resent the film for being the first of Richard Pryor's post-'82 career where he confessed he "hid" from his former self-destructive lifestyle by playing accident-prone poor-soul shlubs in sweet-corny big-studio 80's comedies. At least "Superman III" hired him on the basis of one comedy routine.
And yes, like "Bustin' Loose", you can tell this is a white-written comedy that automatically assumes black audiences will laugh uproariously if there are jokes ridiculing the KKK. Sad, really.)

He's lucky--It could have been the 1976 Francis Veber movie, and he'd have ended up with a French guy.
But, at least we wouldn't have gotten the dopey kissup whitey-bashing either.
