United Kingdom The Films of Michael Reeves (Screenbound) - 21st March, 2022

The Films of Michael Reeves Blu-ray

A listing has just appeared on baseorg, described as a 'Collector's Edition Box Set'. One would hope it's more than just a repackaging of the current releases of The Sorcerers (even though this is OOP) and Witchfinder General. Remasters of both would be excellent, along with the inclusion of Revenge of the Blood Beast/The She Beast for a definitive set.

Knowing Screenbound though, expect the release date to slip.

It's on Screenbound's website. It includes The Sorcerers, Witchfinder General, and Castle of the Living Dead. Plus a feature-length doc

The early death of director Michael Reeves at just 25 robbed the UK of a potential major movie-making talent. This ultimate Blu-Ray collection includes both of his iconic works (Witchfinder General and The Sorcerers), along with the first-ever Blu-Ray release of ‘The Castle of the Living Dead’, where he was part of the scriptwriting team, networking and learning on-set skills. Completing this stunning collection is the brand new feature-length documentary ‘The Young General’, featuring Ian Ogilvy.

Great, but that still doesn't tell us if these are new restorations or not. I'm guessing not, since no mention was made of it in the promotional blurb.

Alas, this collection is missing a very important piece.

Yes, they should have called it

"Most of the Films of Michael Reeves"

or maybe

"Three of the Films of Michael Reeves"

I hadn’t realised he’d died so young I’m also 25 and that’s quite a laudable effort, making so many films people still remember more than half a century later.

I don’t really count second unit direction. The guy only directed three films, and here we have a Michael Reeves set that’s missing a third of his directorial output. I consider CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD to be a nice extra feature. Why the hell is REVENGE OF THE BLOOD BEAST missing? I’m glad I still have my Dark Sky DVD, which still looks damn good for a DVD of that particular film and contains an absolutely smashing audio commentary by Ian Ogilvy, Barbara Steele and Paul Maslansky. I should probably pick up the Raro Blu at some point and hold on to the Dark Sky for the commentary.

“Michael Reeves: Limited (To Two Of His Three Directorial Efforts) Edition Film Collection”

The picture on Screenbound's site shows the exact same covers for The Sorcerers and Witchfinder General with the old BBFC logos, so it looks like the only new thing in the set is the Castle Of The Living Dead disc.

Bet Castle of the Living Dead will be vanilla in terms of extras. The Severin release had 2 comentaries & 2 interviews as well as the soundtrack.

£24.99 at HMV. I suppose it would be an extra 5 pounds for a book with new essays.

Already got Witchfinder and Sorcerers on blu-ray.

Is this just the Odeon Blu Ray of the Sorcerers repackaged (or the same transfer) or is it a new transfer?

Given it looks like the exact same release shoved in a new box, I highly doubt they've changed anything on it.

Since that's the only new disc in this set, that's the one that gets the new documentary.

Moot for me anyway, because I won't be getting this as I already have all the films. I'm also a bit annoyed at how they're trying to gloss over She-Beast entirely - an email I got yesterday from Screenbound proudly stated this box set was all of his credited films! That's just a shitty misuse of English for the purposes of marketing to try and pull the wool over the eyes of the ignorant. I know in the grand scheme if things it doesn't matter all that much, but the more I type I can't help getting more annoyed at how intentionally disingenuous they're being in the marketing - I mean, there's no actual need at all to make out it's "complete" to get people to buy it.

I know the script uses a pseudonym, but they're seriously claiming that because his director's credit is Mike (rather than Michael) Reeves? That's like saying that because he was credited as Donald Siegel on The Killers and Rough Cut that they weren't credited Don Siegel films despite the latter literally bearing the possessive credit 'A Siegel film.' That's the crappiest abuse of semantics since Mark Cousins said Casablanca isn't a classic because it isn't 'classical' (which he chooses to define as balanced, when classical balance is a) not the same as classical or classic and b) relates to music) to show off how clever he thinks he is.
