Interesting news, thanks.
I bought this game on release date as a kid for Genesis back then. I was hoping it would be the next best thing to Street Fighter 2, but it was just okay at best for the fighting. The enemy CPU was very tough to defeat, and took me a lot of practice to win the final boss battle on normal difficulty. The characters are interesting though, so credit to the game there. My favorites were the robed Alchemist with the staff, the Detective with the cuffs and trenchcoat, and the Trident fishman as well as Blade and the lady with the black hair. The Circus Acrobat lady was okay. The zombie guy was okay. Caveman, just okay. Gameplay 3/5 but nothing that original to separate it and make it really stand out IMO. Nice backgrounds, like the Lava Volcano stage. I'll bet there is probably 1% chance Eternal Champions gets made or is released in movie theaters. There is no demand for an Eternal Champions movie adaptation IMO. Direct to TV or video streaming? Yes, that is much more likely and possible. Will be interesting to see how much they stray away from the video game in the movie version. |

my best friend and were so hyped for this game growing up - reading all about it in Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro. We got it on launch day and liked the levels and characters designs but trying to do the "fatalities" was frustrating as hell. We played through with each character for maybe a month or two and then just never went back to it, like it never existed. Fighting games back then were all about sequels so it was a little surprising it never got one.
Every few years my buddy and I still talk about this one, in fact it was just a few months ago I had nostalgia glasses on and looked up some YouTube videos and though I haven't played it in close to thirty years, it looks like it did not age well. I think they had a great concept with the characters and levels - so if this film does come to fruition, it could be fun. |

I forgot about the Cyborg. He was okay. A lot of the special power moves seemed a bit underwhelming, and sometimes awkward. Nice art work though for most of the characters and backgrounds. The music was okay, sound effects okay. Would have liked more modes or something to keep the game fresh. The final boss was a bit generic, like in Virtua Fighter. |

Fighting Masters would have been cool as a movie. Though I think it would work better as animated instead of live action.

The character roster was very diverse for its era.
No 3 Kung fu dudes with different hair color, the big dude, and the agile female. I recall each had their own background stories on why they entered the contest. ![]() |

I played the Sega CD version, and it's mostly the sound and music that is much better than the good Genesis version. Otherwise, only subtle differences in the visuals. Some better animations maybe. It's been years.
So who would the lead hero be, or would it be a team movie? I think it would be based on the Detective as the main hero, and then he forms a team to fight some stronger villain threatening the world. Eternal Champions reminds me of that movie I haven't seen yet, Marvel's Eternals. Then there was a TV show about people having special powers, Heroes. Just thinking of what would make the Detective special, or the lady fighter, acrobat, etc.? The Caveman, Trident fishman, Ghoul and Alchemist, they seem like they have more magic powers or unique time jumping presence to be considered "Eternal". I'll be surprised if we hear more about this after the initial news. |

The Marvel Eternals were a “family” like The Inhumans. All the characters have distinctive skills…..magic, tech, cosmic, alien, etc. The “detective” looking dude is pretty much Roarschah or The Question type of character. Mortal Combat-ish. |

For a movie though, they tend to have a leader type character, but I can see this going in the Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter movie direction. I wonder if they'll ever make a successful Street Fighter live-action movie. Probably best kept as animation. |

I'm honestly shocked we've never had a b-budget level Streets of Rage yet.
I'd love a The Warriors-esque, neo-noir crunchy action movie with a talented MMA cast. Axel, Blaze and Adam in their vests and jeans kicking the shit out of people across the streets, beaches and apartment buildings in a line. They could even use a synth version of the same soundtrack. |
