Default Blu-ray Players that can play movies at 1.5x speed with sound

Hey guys, I’m looking for a Blu-ray player that allows you to watch discs at 1.5x speed while still playing sound like the PS 3-5 does…. Can anyone recommend a player that can do this? Working from home I love this option with old tv shows but I feel like I might be burning out my PlayStation doing so.

It’s great for old tv shows and commentaries.

Thank you for reading!

When I am in human mode, I prefer watching things at one times speed. If one is in artificial intelligence computer application mode, then using a 16 times speed BD-ROM drive is ideal to watch things at 16 times speed by using direct digital binary with no conversion to analog.

All joking aside, offhand I do not know of any current in production standalone 4K Blu-ray player or 2K Blu-ray player that is capable of 1.5 speed or 2 times speed with audio. There are some older out of production Panasonic Blu-ray players and Philips Blu-ray players that had the 1.5 times feature with audio. It's good that the Playstation 3 to 5 offer this feature. Not even PowerDVD Ultra 22 for Windows BD-ROM drives offer that 1.5 times feature with audio. While it allows one to get through a movie faster by watching at 1.5 or 2 times speed, most people feel it takes away from the movie watching experience if a human being watches at anything faster than 1 times speed. It would be cool if the 1.5 speed with audio was offered on all players, but it's my understanding that because of lack of demand the feature disappeared when they went to newer chipsets.

This is a feature that Panasonic should have mentioned in their owner’s manual (I do not see the feature mentioned in the owner's manual). The consumer is required to find a retail store that has Blu-ray players not only on display, but also hooked up so that one can find out which brand and model of player offers 1.5 times speed with audio.

Companies need to do a better job with the owners manuals. There are other Panasonic players that most likely support this feature. The higher-end Panasonic UB9000 should offer the 1.5 times speed with audio also, but that would need to be verified.

Yeah i imagine you are right about the UB9000 as it sounds very similar to the UB820 but just built to a more premium standard. I imagine the software on them is very similar but like you i can not say for sure.

My time is limited, i would love a new player that supports a faster playback. after using the higher speed on netflix and youtube, some things just seem slow now.

I'm just trying to fathom under what possible context someone could want this (/j).

I think this is a case where you'd actually have to take a file into an editing software, adjust the speed to 1.5x, then burn that onto a disc. Like, I don't the PLAYER ITSELF can adjust the speed of video, I think that speed has to be built in before it's exported to mp4.

I think if you're messing around like that you may as well run them in VLC player and change the playback speed.

I've heard of a lot of people wanting to do this with audio books, they don't like the pauses and the expositions and just want to get through it as soon as possible. As some have said, their time is limited (admittedly I don't have as much time as I would like but I still wouldn't do this). I personally don't get it either, but there is certainly a market for it.

The podcast app I'm using (AntennaPod) has a feature that automatically skips past any silence in the audio. I tried using that once and while you do save time it also makes the cadence of the speech extremely rapid and tiring to listen to haha.

For videos on YouTube or whatever it can be useful with a 1.5x speedup for sure, but outside of that I've never felt like it'd be appropriate.

As for the topic at hand, interesting to know that supposedly the UB820 has this feature. I have a UB450 on order currently, wonder if that also supports that. I'll have to check it out when I receive it. I wouldn't use it myself but it's half the price of the 820 so might be a better option for OP.
Edit: It does not appear to have that feature.

As a UB820 owner I can personally confirm that this works with regular BDs, but not on 4K discs.

I mostly use it for commentaries and interviews, but also older tv shows that seem to drag sometimes (like og “dynasty” and Simpsons episodes) and movies I’m revisiting for the #Nth time for an assignment. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I have a UB820 on order!
