Strange Way of Life | a western short by Almodóvar

“Strange Way of Life,” which begins production in late August, will star Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as a pair of middle-aged gunslingers at the center of a 30-minute Western. Much of the action will take place in the desert region of Spain’s Almería region, where Sergio Leone famously shot “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” though Almodovár was not thinking of the story as a throwback to Spaghetti Westerns. “I’m not consciously referencing those movies,” he said. “I don’t know what it will be like, except that it will be mine.” [+]

While being a big fan of "The Human Voice", I do hope Alberto Iglesias composes a phenomenal score for this instead of just reusing the scores from his last ten Almodóvar films.

When Almodóvar directed his last short film, "The Human Voice" with Tilda Swinton, it was paired with a rerelease of "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". If Sony Classics is distributing this, perhaps it will be paired with another classic Almodóvar since they own his entire catalogue that shares similar thematic themes.

"Strange Way of Life" was told as well as it could within this shorter format, but I also wished for a little bit more time to spend with the characters to feel more familiar. There is a compelling conflict of interest between the two leads in its climatic scene of action, which will either pull them closer together or threaten to sever their relationship forever.

This opened with another short "The Human Voice" with Tilda Swindon in essentially a one woman showcase. I found this one compelling as well, particularly in the choice of location (it leans into the story's stage play source material).

Both films are full of vibrant color. I think these are my first Almodóvar films I've seen.
