United Kingdom The World At War

The World at War Blu-ray 4:3

The World at War Blu-ray 16:9

Not exactly cheap but worth it for one of the finest documentary series ever made http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/1...n/Product.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2...-war-fremantle

That's a REALLY stupid comparison.

Truly magnificent documentary on our penchant for mass murder and destruction.

I've seen it twice and will watch it again in 5 years or so.

The DVDs (dirt cheap) are pretty good but I will go for the Bluray if they can improve upon them (pictue-wise). This series although about vision had very little to do with quality picture so I hope they don't mess with any of the vision. Shoving the old elements through a superdupercomputer won't cut it.

I'd like to see the UK government seize this programme and make it a national treasure.

I totally agree, a fine documentary. Trouble is all wars are orchestrated by the Elite who play chess with there nations human contingent.

A quick warning - they do intend to crop the original series to 16x9 for the BD release.

No sale if it's 16:9. That was the history of WWII and helped shape the world today and the last thing we need is some Apple-friendly over-paid young bastard deciding what to remove and revise. There'll be a George Lucas Cut next.

If people want to cut out (crop) the picture they can f***ing zoom!

While I agree, isn't it the case the much of the sound for the contemporary wartime footage was post-dubbed 'effects'? You *might* be hearing a Merlin engine, but not necessarily from that Spitfire.

I think you mean Germany.

Many Germans were in many other countries (and even fought against Germany) and didn't care for their war-mongering Reich.

You have to be accurate if you want to be funny.

Looks like war is breaking out here!!!

BOT.

I am very annoyed (if reports are accurate) that they are cropping this to 16:9 when the original was broadcast at 4:3. This is supposed to be (and indeed is) a serious historical series. Seminal in fact. So if they can restore Star Trek properly (which is fiction) it is a travesty that they are mucking up such an important title.

Somebody in charge of this project should get their ar$e in gear and ensure it is done properly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do notice that some retailers with the title up for pre-order have it listed as 4:3 fullscreen. So post #8 might not be entirely accurate.

Why not?

Three blind mice walk into a bar. They are unaware of their surroundings, so to derive humour from their predicament would be exploitative.

Default The world at war in Blu

As others have said the key here will be the specs. trimming it to 16:9 would be criminal. What we want is the original pictures as they were taken which means 1.33:1 (or was it 1.37:1). Another issue is subtitles. There were no subtitles on the DVDs but voice to text technology now makes it so easy to add subtitles inexpensively. It should be noted that those of us who went through this war and are still alive are most likely to be hard of hearing and there are tens of millions to whom English is a second language who will be interested in this series. The producers have the possibility of doing a really good job of this upgrade but can also make a real mess of it. I await the specs with hope and anticipation.

FremantleMedia themselves say it is being "upgraded to 5.1 DTS Master Audio. Both DVD and Blu-ray formats will be in 16:9 ratio for optimised viewing on modern wide-screen televisions".

Thats the way the cookie crumbles. 16x9 cropping should be expected.

Why? Most of the time OAR is respected in BD/DVD releases these days, even if it is 4:3 and a TV show (Star Trek TOS comes to mind). I know its a documentary, but they really shouldn't mess with it, I can't think of any other BD release that is 4:3 and cropped to 16:9. But you never know, maybe it will look quite good, just have to wait and see I guess...
