Germany The Frighteners (with new 4K scan) [Turbine]

Release Date: TBA

Announcement by Turbine

Translation:

Quote:
15 YEARS TURBINE
We celebrate with another 15 titles on 15 more days
Day 29 - "The Frighteners"

Today, 23 years ago, THE FRIGHTENERS by Peter Jackson with Michael J. Fox in the leading role opened in American cinemas.
We are collaborating with Universal Pictures Germany and in coordination with Peter Jackson on a new release, which includes the Director's Cut for the first time with a full German language version. For this we have already dubbed the missing scenes.

We would like to call you a specific release date, but the 4K-scan needs something else, because the movie really deserves it. And in order for the ghosts to haunt the home cinema as well, the edition will be refined with sound in Dolby Atmos and Auro-3D.

So, after 30 days the game really comes to an end tomorrow. No further extension.

Thatīs really awesome! What a year for Turbine! Finally a german company, which is - at least to me - on par with Arrow or Scream! Now just release your items in a more consistent packaging style and weīre heading for a bright future together!

I doubt they'll wait till 2021 just to time it for the 25th anniversary...

We always thought that great, collectible packaging is consistent. Would you prefer every film to look the same?

I asked and they said they haven't made a decision on whether they want to go UHD with it or stick with a 4K resto on blu-ray yet. I let them know what I'd like to see

It did, down into my very soul. But I'm not paying that again for a Turbine edition of anything unless it comes mit neue 4K disc!!

Well... on the one hand, one would actually need not one UHD, but two: one for each version of the movie. Which might raise the cost for such a set substantially.

On the other hand, there is only so much bonus material that is available for The Frighteners (and it has already been published on the 10th Anniversary DVD / the previous BluRay), so this set would be in need of more content to be on par with previous Turbine collector's boxes (like The Blues Brothers, The Thing or especially Psycho).

On the third hand, having a limited boxset of ~5000 units with a UHD available for the first time worldwide might trigger a higher demand from all around the globe.

UHD takes a release from a maybe to a must every time.

^ Definitely NOT, at least for me. Couldn't care less about the format. Standard Blu-ray with great new scan and master with perfect compression and skilfully optimized skyhigh bitstream and I'm in, no matter what the release.

I have almost 3.700 BDs now in my collection and space becomes more and more a real issue; personally yes, I would prefer, if the editions would come in a certain size and shape so that they will fit with the rest of my collection. Thatīs why I prefer Steelbooks and editions with Slipcovers. They are special, but fit perfectly with the rest of my collection. Your īThe Thingī Set is a work of art for sure; but I almost didnīt buy it, because I knew it wouldnīt fit anywhere in my collection set up (and also I already had 5 other The Thing Releases within my BD collection). Your Psycho Set is amazing. I bought it. I donīt have any space to put it properly. And it has a totally different size than your The Thing set. Sorry, yes - I personally really would prefer, if those sets would come in the same size and norm factor, so that I could put them at least together in the same spot...

You can take the disc packaging out (it's a G1 mediabook) and store it along with your collection. And put the outer packaging with all the goodies elsewhere (mine are standing quite high on a cupboard).

A UHD of The Frighteners is a must own. It's just that simple.

Honestly when I see a 4K scan only getting a standard 1080p release I die a little inside knowing it could have been given a higher quality release. If it has a 4K scan it should get a 4K release.

A UHD of The Frighteners would be great.

I only ever watch the theatrical cut, so for me that would be the priority if only one version were to get the 4K treatment.

The existing extras are definitive so a port of those would be fine.

It's a release that practically organises itself.

I don't do limited editions though, so hopefully a standard alternative will be made available for us regular folks.

The extended version isn't exactly some 3 hour cut though is it? It's only 12 or 13 minutes longer IIRC so that could be branched, it doesn't need two UHDs.
