Default Until Dawn

There's not been much activity in the PS3 forum for this game, not surprising since it's been dark for almost 2 years. So I decided with the teaser Sony has dropped that this game should get bumped up to the PS4 section since it's pretty likely the game will be announced for PS4 at Gamescom next week.

So here's 7 things to know about Until Dawn courtesy of PSU

1. Until Dawn is a horror adventure game under development by Supermassive Games whose previous titles include Killzone HD and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.

2. It’s been described as a teen horror experience and Supermassive has hired Hollywood writers Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick to create a script inspired by classic movies of the genre such as I Know What You Did Last Summer.

3. The storyline follows a group of teens who stay overnight in a log cabin. One-by-one they get picked off and murdered by a mysterious serial killer. We’re promised twists and shocks along the way, though the script will also feature humour inspired by movies such as Scream.

4. To create an immersive experience, Until Dawn will not have a HUD or onscreen buttons to hamper the scares and will play out from the first-person perspective.

5. It will take advantage of PlayStation Move which players will use as a flashlight to navigate the environment. It’s currently unconfirmed whether players will be restricted to using Sony’s peripheral to play the game, or whether DualShock functionality will be available.

6. The storyline will change based on decisions made and players will get the opportunity to play as seven different characters. If you die, you won’t respawn, you’ll simply step into the shoes of the next potential victim.

7. There’s strong rumours that Until Dawn could utilise Project Morpheus, Sony Computer Entertainment’s virtual headset. Can you imagine how scary that could be?

Here's the initial annoucement trailer, which showcases some of the characters including the terryfying-looking serial killer.

And the teaser released last week

Box art that was released last April, which would suggest that it was playable with a DS3 (the Move sticker says Move Compatible and where as Move Exclusive games say Move Required.)

They said it was completely redone for the PS4, with a brand new story to boot.

Now it looks like you will have some key story decisions to make (ala Heavy Rain) that will determine who of the 8 characters (if any) will survive.

Looking forward to it.

According to Supermassive's website, Until Dawn uses a modified version of Killzone: Shadow Fall's engine...

Quote:
Using the power of the PlayStation®4 and the superior rendering capability of the Killzone™ Shadowfall Engine, together with our own major enhancements in lighting, camera, and animation systems, Until Dawn brings emotional and credible performances of a talented Hollywood cast to life in its realistically terrifying environments.

As a fan of slasher/horror films, I always wanted a game where a group of teens gets hunted down by a crazy killer. This is right up my alley.

And the fate of these teens are in your hands whether who lives who die? Sign me up. I'm definitely most interested in this title for sure.

Can't wait for this. Been a long time coming. Glad to see they got rid of the move controls it seems. Don't have a move and never planned on getting one.

Yes, yes you were. Have a sticker.

I'm a goddamned horror nut (be it in novel, game, or film form). So, just like Alien, Dying Light, the Evil Within, Silent Hills, Resident Evil HD, and seemingly every other game in development, this will be a day one purchase for me. (Yeesh, some genres are taking a while to get rolling this gen, but Horror is entering a freaking videogame renaissance).

Hundreds of endings ...
Sounds a lot like Horror B-Movie Heavy Rain, which is great imo

The Butterfly Effect

Supermassive Games' Pete Samuels and Will Byles held a behind-closed-doors session during gamescom to give us a better look into upcoming PS4 horror title Until Dawn. During that session they explained how their PS3 Move-only campy teen horror title transformed into a PS4 adult horror, starring top-tier actors and featuring high-end technologies.

Until Dawn is all about player choice, offering thousands of play paths that lead to hundreds of possible endings. A lot of this is tied to one of the game's mechanics called the Butterfly Effect.

As eight friends stranded in a mountain getaway work to survive, you'll control each of them, making choices for them. The paths you go down take every action into consideration, from small choices, like choosing to pick up a book, to large moral dilemmas. You might have to decide to shoot your friend in the head, for example.

This is important as Until Dawn was designed so that every character can survive and/or die. And if they die, they stay dead -- no restarts here. The game will adapt the story if a character dies, so every decision you make can alter the story completely.

During some of these choices, a small butterfly icon will appear in the upper right side of the screen. This indicates that the Butterfly Effect is underway. Pulled straight from chaos theory, the butterfly effect has it so that any one small change can bring about larger changes further down the road. For the purposes of Until Dawn, any one choice you make can have you going down any one path, eventually ending up at one of any of the hundreds of endings.

To demonstrate, Samuels shared a great visual that I wish we had a copy of. Using an image of a butterfly, its very center represented the story's origin. Highlighted veins branching from that center represented the first few choices, and all of the subsequent branches fanned out to the very ends of the butterfly's wings, with each end representing the hundreds of possible endings. The branches fanned out and connected at various points along their length, representing the thousands of possible paths.

So opening the wrong door, picking up the right clue, or saying something when you should have said something else will take you down your own path. There's a good chance that your path and ending will be nothing like your friend's path and ending. As the game progresses, there's a good chance that two people won't see the same scenes or hear the same dialogue.

Believe it or not, Supermassive shot and recorded every possible scene and outcome for these branches and endings. They believe that being able to experience your choices adds to the suspense and horror of Until Dawn so they went to the trouble of auditioning 200 actors before getting to their current cast, which includes TV star Hayden Panettiere. They wanted only top actors to fit with the high-definition capture and high volume of voice work required. From what I saw, they've done a nice job with both the casting and capture.

Supermassive has come a long way from the campy PS3 Move game they showed here at gamescom two years ago. They went from flashlight scares to a full-fledged PS4 playable horror movie that lets the player decide on its story and outcome. What an overhaul!

Thousands of choices? Hundreds of endings?

This is my most anticipated game for PS4 right now. It's everything I want in a horror experience!

I hope there's an online mode where you can play as the killer to hunt down a group of teens, who are other players. Before sunrise.

Looks like the kind of demo we could get sooner rather than later on the PSN imo.

Seems much farther along than I expected frankly, even got the "Previously on..." like a Supernatural episode at the beginning, and the mini survey to determine your tastes and how to "direct" the game according to your choices.

This games basically Heavy Rain meets Horror in terms of multiple choices, endings etc.

However, I have to say whilst watching the Gamescom footage of people playing, i'm somewhat disappointed. The way you look at items using the DS4 motion control is very clunky at the moment and the movement of the DS4 to aim the flashlight seems to lack a bit of finesse also.

After playing the PT for Silent Hills, I can't help but wonder if a 1st person option should be a mandatory inclusion alongside the 3rd person view. It would scream higher immersion.

As it is, the games got me intrigued, but not totally sold. Its going to need to aloow you to control sans motion controls. I find analogue sticks to rotate and inspect items and direct the flashlight would be more finessed and the move like controls are too gimkicky.
