Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

I know this film has been forgotten or ignored by most, but I've alway thought it was a creative and effective horror sequel. I never listened to the DVD commentary, but I found this snippet on Wikipedia:

Director Joe Berlinger has stated that he originally made the film with more of an ambiguous tone, but Artisan recut the film and re-shot certain scenes to add more "traditional" horror movie elements, thus creating what they saw as a more "commercial" film. Berlinger repeatedly expresses his dislike of the studio's changes throughout the film's DVD commentary.

Very interesting. This is wishful thinking, and it would likely require the effort of several parties who don't care to re-visit this project, but I'd love to see a director's cut more akin to Berlinger's original vision. Sadly, even the directors of the original Blair Witch Project have publicly decried this film (despite serving as executive producers, but apparently having little creative involvement).

I assume Lionsgate has the rights to this, so I suppose it's on them to bare down and give a shit about releasing a blu-ray.

I'd love to see BW2 brought to Blu, the version of the movie on streaming sites is an HD transfer. I did a comparison shot of that version with the DVD, click the pics to go to the large version.




It's not a great transfer sure but it's an improvement, more than the BW1 Blu! It would be cool to bring Berlinger in to create his intended cut but even without that this could benefit from the amount of material that was online exclusive like deleted scenes which are long gone and unavailable on any release. If the materials just sitting there and they've done the transfer, why not?

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows is one of the most underrated horror films of the 200x's. I remember seeing this in the theater in Fall 2000, and thinking it was almost as good as the first film. The storyline was quite unnerving, especially the

[Show spoiler]ghost children in the road, the scene when they realized they were mis-remembering everything that happened, etc.

Definitely a film that you appreciate more on repeat viewings...

An anthology BD with BW 1&2 and all the related "documentary," materials would be interesting.

I've always liked this one over the first film liked how i took place in a different location and wasn't too much POV style of filmmaking there.

Well, with the new Blair Witch film right around the corner, I'm planning on revisiting Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows at some point soon. Extremely well-done & underrated horror flick, I remember seeing this in the theater back in Fall 2000. I believe it got panned at least partially because it was so different from the first film - while TBWP (1999) was a documentary-style film, Blair Witch 2 was much more of a mainstream horror film.

However, in some ways I actually thought BW 2 was the superior film - very disturbing, and in many ways actually scarier than the original.

Early reviews suggest that the new film is nothing but non-stop jump-scares. I hope not. the original had very few jump-scares, just an interesting mythology to explore.
Having said that, I hope if the reboot is successful we will see BW2 on bluray as part of the, "revival."

Watching this now, and it has to be the worst sequel I've seen. I saw it before when it first came out and don't remember it being this campy, and poor.. Still early though, hopefully it picks up, but wow..

I think the time has passed. If it was going to be released there was no better time than at the same time as the new one came out.
