Default Sony console expected to sell 10 million, lead the industry by 2011

Sony console expected to sell 10 million, lead the industry by 2011

Research firm iSuppli has stated that it believes Sony's PlayStation 3 will shine the brightest through 2008, and post the strongest growth of any of the next-generation consoles.

The company expects the PS3 to sell 10 million units this year, almost doubling its installed base to 20.3 million units worldwide, according to Reuters.

That compares to the Xbox 360, which it expects to sell 7.5 million units to give it an installed base of 25.7 million units, and the Wii which it says will sell 12.2 million and give it an installed base of 30.2 million.

However, iSuppli also claimed that the PS3 would turn the current market order on its head, and become the industry-leading machine by 2011, with an installed base of 38.4 million units.

Analyst Pam Tufegdzic commented: "In this stage of the new-generation video game console market, consumers are showing they'd rather be entertained and pay less for their consoles than shell out more for the latest and greatest technology," referring to the current success of the Wii.

But following the PlayStation 3 price cut, the increasing success of the Blu-ray format, and a better forthcoming software pipeline, Sony's console is expected to fare better this year.

Difficult to take seriously, just look at the wii numbers.

Wii currently ~20m
wii projected 2008- 30m
wii projected 2011- <38m

That would be an epic collapse beginning right now (as in literally 37 minutes)
The wii should be around 40m by this time next year.

edit: I expect the ps3 to be comfortably ahead of the 360 by that time (2011), just not anywhere near wii numbers.

Only 2.2 mill. behind the Wii? Not bad, concidering that the PS3 has the best value for money, f*ck all the haters and the HD DVD/ M$ hearters (which are practicly the same thing) that troll around this forum.

What is that gonna do? Take on Wii and Ps3? That would make Xbox720 childish. Picking on old gen and such.

I still don't get why people buy the Wii, the gameplay is approximative in majority of games because the motion detection is flawed : it only detects a portion of the movement that triggers a result (ex : in Wii tennis, you can flick the wrist at a precise time instead of doing a lrage "tennis like" move). Targeting the casual gamer may bring them money, but it taints video gaming, as developers take wayyyy less time developing a Wiigame than others.

I don't care what you think of the PS3, Sony was brilliant in deciding to make Blu Ray part and parcel of the system. It was the deciding factor in this format war in my opinion, and I think it is a GREAT machine.

PS3 will never outsell the 360 while the 360 stillhas an 80% failure rate so they get to count all the returns and warranty replacements as actual sales... :P

Once I softened my attitude and purchased the 60 G PS3 last year, I began to feel the love for Sony all over again. A stellar list of Blu-ray and game titles should easily help catapult this amazing system to the top of the electronics heap.

I think the Wii is brilliant. It brings in gamers that otherwise wouldn't play. How is that a bad thing? The market appears to agree with me too.

LOL good one.......the thing with the wii is its in its own market, they could sell 100 million consoles today and it would not effect the ps3. the wii market doesn't care about AAA 3rd party games and thats why you dont see any of them on the system and the other resone is the power of the system. and games dont really sell on the wii the games that sells millions are nintendo made games. im not saying the wii is bad its good and fun system to bring new people to games, but it does not have an effect on anything ps3. just my 2 cents

I still dont get why people compare Wii to PS3.

It's like compare a Dell entry level office desktop to an Alienware gaming PC. Wii considered as "next gen" is as laughable as Paris Hilton being considered a virgin.

Taints video gaming?

I think you're taking gaming a bit too seriously, man.
