Default The Amusement Park (Lost George A. Romero 1973 Film)

Quote:
Yellow Veil Pictures has picked up the worldwide sales rights to The Amusement Park, a newly-restored "lost" film by zombie movie pioneer George A. Romero.

The arthouse genre sales outfit will start shopping the 1973 feature at the Cannes virtual market this week. The Amusement Park, commissioned from Romero by the Lutheran Society, stars Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies, and humiliations of aging in America are illustrated by his journey among roller coasters and chaotic crowds.

The George A. Romero Foundation recently discovered the film and restored it under the direction of producer Suzanne Romero.

"We couldn't be more excited to team up with the George A. Romero Foundation to bring this horrifying lost film to audiences. George's work here, as always, is an unnerving criticism of American society, this time embodied through a relentless amusement park," Yellow Veil Pictures co-founder Justin Timms said in a statement.

“Though not in the horror genre it is George’s most terrifying film. It has Romero’s unique footprint all over it!” Suzanne Romero added. -THR

Do wonder if the George A Romero Foundation is trying to get this to blu?

Interesting enough, it's not necessarily considered a horror film, yet it's been called Romero's darkest!

If you add Paramount on Amazon Prime, Shudder is included.

I was surprised this ran over 50 minutes which makes it almost feature length. It’s clear Romero took the opportunity, and money, to do his own thing.

This was a dark, twisted, surreal and shocking experience, depicting the real horror of a society neglecting their eldery. I love how everyone involved were real people, not actors, except for the lead, of course. The raw 16mm documentary style hits home hard. Also amazing sound design imo. This is one of Romero's most interesting films. So glad it was discovered, restored and released after being buried since 1973.

An important step in Romero's development as a film maker and any missing film is welcome. Judged purely as a film (and really its a PSA) its like an overlong and very unsubtle episode of The Twilight Zone. Its also painful on the eyes and ears, sound is loud and abrasive and colour is horrible. It was worth seeing but I doubt I'd buy it on disc

Such an awesome package. If that booklet and packaging was in English I'd buy that in an instant.

Just came across this late in the night as I was testing out AMC+ which includes Shudder. Didn't notice this was a Romero film and blind clicked on it because the name and poster art looked pretty interesting. And it ended up being a pretty bizzare watch. Wasn't really focused the first go round and was just like, "huh, that's weird. what am I watching?" Ended up watching it again since it's under an hour long. Definitely some Twilight Zone kind of vibes and perhaps a bit ahead of its time given this was supposed to be a PSA for elder abuse. I'll admit that growing old and being neglected/marginalized is something that is terrifying and so this film can resonate. Even as an 'old millennial' I kind of feel ignored when talking to college aged people these days.

The French Blu Ray has forced subs so unless your player can reposition them off screen it may be a deal breaker for anyone that wants to watch it without them.

I really hope Yellow Veil releases this on Blu through their VS deal. I've watched it a few times on Shudder but would love to add it to my collection.
