From John Hughes, the legendary screenwriter of National Lampoon’s Vacation, Mr. Mom, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Home Alone, comes this hilarious film with maximum comedy at minimum wage! The town con (Frank Whaley, The Doors) and the town beauty (Jennifer Connelly, The Hot Spot) team up to outwit a half-wit pair of would-be burglars, real-life brothers Durmot Mulroney (Young Guns) and Kieran Mulroney (Nowhere to Run). Whaley stars as Jim Dodge, a smooth-talking small-town guy with a knack for putting up a front—but no talent for holding down a job. But Jim’s life suddenly takes a turn for the fantastic when he finds himself locked inside the local department store one night with Josie McClellan (Connelly), the daughter of the town’s wealthiest citizen, and two bumbling criminals. Directed by television veteran Bryan Gordon (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and co-starring Barry Corbin (My Science Project), William Forsythe (Raising Arizona) and comedy legend John Candy (Uncle Buck) in an unbilled cameo.

Also Available on Previously Released Standalone Blu-ray:

I own the Kino, but will not buy one of their UHDs cause they kinda suck now and KLI hurt my feefees and never apologized. Hopefully someone in Europe does this better later, Cool As Ice got a way better Blu ray in Germany while Kino was barebones. Also this would be a great opportunity to get some of the deleted footage or even "find" a longer cut of the film, but it's Kino so it will be minimum effort at maximum retail

If you want extras, the Imprint blu-ray is the one to get. Despite the absence of the deleted scenes, it's still a dream release as far as extras are concerned:

Back when Kino announced their blu-ray, I dreamed about the possible extras:

  1. Get director Bryan Gordon to record an audio commentary for it. I would love to hear from him about the making of this movie:
    • Discussion of all the deleted scenes
    • The long delay in releasing the movie. It was probably filmed around Fall/Winter 1989. When they are in the music department of Target, you can see CD longboxes of:
      • New Kids On The Block - Merry, Merry Christmas
      • Billy Joel - Storm Front
      • Phil Collins - But Seriously
      • Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood
      • Randy Travis - No Holdin' Back
    • The ideas that were reused in Home Alone
      • An inept, bungling pair of crooks breaking in
      • The protagonist thinking he's by himself and going wild and crazy
    • Working with John Hughes
  2. Do a HD scan of the trailer. The current version is poor quality and this trailer is special because of all the deleted scenes in it
Not surprisingly, we didn't get much from Kino other than an audio commentary from someone not involved in the production. But Imprint came to our rescue. I don't think anyone really expected a boutique label to get director Bryan Gordon to do an audio commentary for the movie but they did. They also got interviews with Kieran and Dermont Mulroney and cinematographer Donald McAlpine.

I absolutely adore this movie. I saw it theatrically with a couple of friends in college at a late show..I think we were the only ones in theater. I just watched the BD a couple of weeks ago and it's rather solid for an older scan. This is likely a day one purchase for me unless they really f-up the encoding which is quite possible. Give me something like Bad Lieutenant compression again and I can live with it.

Isn't that disc still locked into a pricey triple movie set? I didn't realize they made new special features, hopefully they release it seperately at some point. Will Lol if Kino can't even get anything done for the UHD.

I remember being told it wasn't worthy of a 2K remaster for the Blu-ray disc hahaha

I'm very surprised how few John Hughes films we've gotten on 4K so far. Ferris Bueller and Wierd Science came out wonderfully, and I'm very happy to have those, but to not have The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and others is a real crime. Uncle Buck is getting a little closer though, and now we've got a Career Opportunities release maybe a year or two away. I guess patience pays off! And we can enjoy our blurays until the 4Ks get here.

Always good to count our blessings...that's the lesson from one of the films, right?

Hope it's a great transfer. Mentioned it before, but I grew up in a rural area without any Target stores around. So as a kid I pretty much thought that it was a fictional company.
