Is there a consensus on the best TV if you only use it for movies (primarily 4k UHD Blu ray) in a dark room?

LG G5 is superb in the brightness department and support for multiple HDR formats bar some very ridiculous issues with HDR10 issues that need to be resolved quickly imo. Also, depending on what size you need for the room, Panasonic etc. might also not have a big enough model. I think though that up to 83" models from. LG got the 4 Stack Tandem panels but the 97" is a WOLED. That said, if you maybe are looking for 65" to 77" you might be in luck. |

get a UST projector..100-150 inches of screen....incredible in home theater experience and will cost you much less than a large OLED.

that's what so great about UST projectors..you don't need a big room..place it on a tv stand or small cabinet and you are good to go even just using your wall.

for movies..definitely..and sports are just fantastic . OLEDs have a lt of pop and of course detail..but sometimes 4K movies can look too colorful or too detailed and unnatural. Projectors are very forgiving providing a more film like presentation and of course you really feel like you are in a theater. Sports are in a world of their own on UST's. Football.Basketball, Baseball, you name it....WOW!!
![]() I can honestly tell you my 65 inch LG G3 is great but I only turn it on once in a while. My UST is on constantly. ![]() |

I definitely cannot see myself going back to a TV lesser than that size and even had my eye on a 77" for my next upgrade. Regarding brightness, there's a LOT of confusion around it. Firstly the brighter an OLED can go say like the fantastic G5 levels this year, it helps a lot with making colours pop more and with small highlight details that need to be bright. It's not just going to be bright for the sake of it once properly calibrated. The content is mastered from 4K nits for basic HDR and up. TVs cannot even reach that level for specular highlights yet and so properly calibrated a G5 will get you very close BUT i personally alsp think you could hold out for sales in the Holiday season and of course the all important HDR fix as well as see what Panasonic TVs review like. Right now, do you have a budget in mind for a 65" model and a timeframe you want to purchase in. If time isn't a factor and you're willing to wait, then the previous years models end up at a very deep discount at many times when the new models release or about to as well as a few months after. I've seen a 55" G4 for as low as £800 or so and 65" models under £1350 on deals although they do go very quickly. Usually the gap between 55" and 65" pricing can be a fair amount even on discount of up to £500 or so it seems on the top end of models but the screen size jump from 55" to 65" is actually bigger than you think because it's diagonally 10" bigger it creates a much bigger screen volume to enjoy. |

Look into the 65" Bravia 8 II because from what I can tell it's basically the A95L but tuned slightly better for dark room. Sony wants to improve how the TV handles the darkest and most challenging scenes. To get 0-5 nits to not be lifted and with proper gradation is actually really hard.

Personally i don't think you should bother with that TV. It's more expensive despite not being their flagship model and performing worse in some areas than the A95L which you can get at a discount over the newer model.
Right now, Panasonic is the last one to really wait for imo to see how it reviews because the LG G5 is absolutely fantastic but it's not doing well with the HDR issues which need to be patched yet and Panasonic may have the better edge on processing over LG although you will pay a premium. |
