WATCHMEN CHAPTER II

Chapter II of the Two-Part Animated Movie Event Brings DC Comics’ Acclaimed Series to Life

Available exclusively on Digital on November 26

4K UHD and Blu-ray arriving on December 3

BURBANK, CA (October 16, 2024) – Based on DC’s acclaimed graphic novel co-created and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen Chapter II, the second part of the all-new animated two-part feature film from Warner Bros. Animation and Paramount, will be released on Digital on November 26 and on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on December 3.

The animated feature concludes the faithful adaptation of the groundbreaking graphic novel series by writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons, which redefined the superhero genre when it debuted in the mid-1980s.

Watchmen Chapter I and Watchmen Chapter II delve into the gritty and complex world of masked vigilantes in an alternate version of America during the Cold War era. The “Watchmen” saga remains a cornerstone of comic book literature, having garnered numerous awards and accolades over the decades.

The adaptation captures the spirit and style of Moore and Gibbons’ original, groundbreaking vision with stunning animation that pays homage to the comic book’s iconic visual style. The film features a stellar voice cast that includes Matthew Rhys (TV’s “Brothers & Sisters,” “The Americans,” “Perry Mason”) Katee Sackhoff (TV’s “Battlestar Galactica,” “Longmire,” “The Mandalorian”) and Titus Welliver (TV’s “Lost,” “Deadwood,” “Sons of Anarchy”).

The film is produced and directed by Brandon Vietti from an adaptation by J. Michael Straczynski. Jim Krieg and Cindy Rago serve as producers and Dave Gibbons serves as consulting producer. Sam Register, Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are executive producers.

Fans will also be able to enjoy a range of bonus features including interviews with the filmmakers including Dave Gibbons, J. Michael Straczynski, and more.

Watchmen Chapter II features all all-star voice cast including Matthew Rhys (Dan Dreiberg, Nite Owl), Katee Sackhoff (Laurie Juspeczyk, Silk Spectre) and Titus Welliver (Rorschach, Walter Kovacs), along with Troy Baker (Adrian Veidt, Ozymandias), Adrienne Barbeau (Sally Jupiter, Silk Spectre), Michael Cerveris (Jonathan Osterman, Dr. Manhattan), Zehra Fazal (Hira Manish, Newscaster), Phil Fondacaro (Tom Ryan, Big Figure), Grey Griffin (Female Citizen #1, Advisor #1) John Marshall Jones (Hooded Justice), Max Koch (Bernard, President Nixon, Lawrence Andrews), Phil LaMarr (Comic Book Narrator, Bernie, Male Citizen #1), Yuri Lowenthal (Seymour, Knot Top #2, Bully #1), Long Nguyen (Attendant #1), Geoff Pierson (Hollis Mason, Prison Guard #1), Jason Spisak (Doug Roth, Bully #2, Hector Godfrey), Kari Wahlgren (Sylvia Kovacs, Female Knot Top), and Rick D. Wasserman (Edward Blake, The Comedian).

Watchmen Chapter II will be available on November 26 to purchase digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and more. On December 3 the film will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Discs online and in-store at major retailers. Pre-order your copy now.

Released on disc only in the US? Strange; I'd have thought these films would have a global audience. Maybe that last Babylon 5 animated movie 4K didn't sell well?

Is this getting a combined movie release like The Death and return of Superman and Batman: The Long Halloween?

I streamed both and liked Part II a lot, much more than Part I. Mostly the Dr. M stuff. Now I might want to get it. Also may wait a bit to see if a combo ever comes.

As a huge Watchmen fan, watching this, it dawned on me...

Don't you think Ozymandias' plan was a huge expensive reach?

And even if you think it would work, why did it have to be NY?

I can see why it doesn't hold up if you are doing a live action version.

Anyway, still loved it and looking forward to having both in one someday.

Any rumbles for both films connected together. I like where they split. But I think it would be better all in one.

Thoughts?

There's a very interesting meta conversation on Mars that I don't remember at all from the previous movie but it's been a while.

Strange that I ordered this from Amazon and I got a slip with the first chapter but not the second. It may have been a reseal. Also odd that the second disc doesn't have coloured texture like the first chapter does and it's just a silver disc with black print of the Doomsday clock.

As promised, I am ready to tell you what I think. I am going to lump the 3 Watchmen movies together since they're so similar. I watched all 3 on my vacation. I watched Snyder's live action movie when it was released and I liked it but I think I had problems following it or something because the Mars sequence should have made a much bigger impression on me than it did. It was watching the Mars sequence in Chapter 2 earlier this year when I realized I needed to own these. But rewatching the movies I do think it had an effect on me, and I'm now tempted to watch the series, which I understand is a sequel to the comics. I feel like the entire story is about Dr. Manhattan. Or at least, he's the driving force. If you think about it, none of the superhero stuff overtly violates physics (ignoring things like, does Owl's ship have enough fuel, etc). So Watchmen feels like 2 stories, Dr. Manhattan, and everything else. There's a sense in which it all ties together in the end, but also a sense in which none of the other Watchmen are really necessary. Still I enjoyed the balance, and thought Rorschach is a pretty cool character, love the voice and the mask.

Overall it's a pretty interesting alternate history take, if you can accept some masked heroes, and then the one "plot miracle" of a God-like character coming into existence. But the interesting thing is that the plot of Watchmen takes place after all of that has happened. So the superheroing is sort of in the past, and now we have aging superheroes dealing with a world on the brink of nuclear war. And it raises many metaphysical questions about fate and destiny. That's one of my favorite parts, exploring how Dr. Manhattan experiences the world. Acting wise the highlights are whoever plays Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach (both versions) and Nixon in the live action, where his role is expanded, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan), and Malin Akerman. Patrick Wilson is ok, I don't really like the Owl character.

I definitely recommend all 3 movies. The only parts I really don't like are the integrated comic-within-a-comic scenes. I know this is only in the Ultimate Cut of the Snyder movie, which also pushes it to kind of a 3 hour slog. In the animated movies you have no choice. But it's not too hard to skip past these if you don't like them. I did watch everything though.

Unfortunately none of the movies are Dolby Vision so that is a missed opportunity, particularly for the recent animated movies. Picture is pretty good for all of them. For the animated movies it looked a little better than what I remembered from my HD streams. The Snyder movie is pretty decent picture-wise but not reference. The site review of 3.5 stars is maybe a bit harsh, I would have thought 4. Sound is very good in all of them, I used headphones for the sound. Some pretty cool sound effects (owl ship, Mars atmosphere, Dr. shenanigans). Lots of specials across 3 discs. The animated movies are just UHDs, no blu-ray, so everything is on the discs (in 1080p). They each have a couple of 10 minute featurettes that are pretty good. For the Snyder movie, everything is on the blu-ray or the special features blu-ray, which are fortunately region free. A couple of hours of stuff. I watched all of them a few weeks ago but they're a pretty good exploration of the movie and how it was made. I recommend all 3 movies and releases. If you've seen one or the other, I recommend watching everything to see the different takes. They're pretty similar though differ somewhat at the end.
