Default The Bling Ring (2013) - 9/17/13 - Sofia Coppola/Emma Watson

In The Bling Ring, Oscar Winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola takes us inside the world of these teens, where their youthful naivete and excitement is amplified by today’s culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession. The members of the Bling Ring introduce us to temptations that any teenager would find hard to resist. And what starts out as youthful fun spins out of control, revealing a sobering view of our modern culture.

The Blu-Ray is set to release in October 2013, no firm date has been set.

I'm going to be seeing this at the theaters this week.

Lots of mixed reviews, but I won't know until I see it for myself.

The worst of the three Sofia Coppola films I've seen. Only so much you can do when you've created a character study on some of the most one dimensional characters seen on screen this year.

Sofia Coppola's movies are more about her commentary on filmmaking itself than the movies' subjects. Just look at the way she uses long takes to maximize tension (as opposed to using frenetic cuts and jumpy camerawork that obscure the image).

My AMC theater doesn't have this and the few theaters within an hours drive that do have one or two showings late at night. Either this is limited release or the reviews were so bad theaters don't want it or both. Sad. I remember when Emma Watson was considered a good actress who was in movies fans wanted to see. Lately, that's not the case. Again, sad.

It looks like Lionsgate is handling A24's stuff (including Ginger & Rosa, another awesome movie).

I don't even think she looks at her films as commentaries on filmmaking. Long takes are nothing new

Anyways, Russian Ark's bests any long takes in Bling Ring

I didn't claim that long takes are "new".

I'm saying mere long takes do not constitute commentary. Coppola was trying to comment on the celebrity obsessed and failed pretty bad in that regard. Yes, we know they are shallow and dumb, what else?

There's just not enough there to mull over the film comes off feeling very superficial.

This movie was complete garbage, saw it over the weekend. Granted the film was based on the events of the Bling Ring but it has been Hollywood fictionized for the screen, it was a major disaster. Too bad because I had high hopes for it

She needed to present the bulk of the film like one of her commercials and glamorize the heck out of their thieving. It's not stylish enough.

So it can be more fun or a more biting piece of social commentary?

I guess I get the hate for the film, but I personally enjoyed.
I don't get why some say the acting was bad, those girls really do talk like that, go watch a video on Alexis Neiers - the phone call video is amazing, who Emma Watson character is (they changed the names ).

The performances are good, but I still found little dramatic interest. Are we supposed to scoff at the gang or sympathize with them. It comes off as undeveloped, not ambiguous or interesting.

Scoff and say "These girls were ****ing dumb to think they wouldn't get caught and that Alexis (Nikki, Emma Watson) thinks she's innocent"

I felt like the characters weren't developed much, but you saw some of their homes, but not many of them would talk to the writer (Nancy Jo Sales) because of their lawyers and whatnot so they couldn't do much because they wanted to stay true to the story and she only really got Nick's story and some of Alexis'.
