Burg Talks Twisted Pictures' Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Source:ShockTillYouDrop.com
October 14, 2009

Last week, it was announced that Twisted Pictures ("Saw" films) were closing a deal to take over the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise. ShockTillYouDrop.com got a chance to talk to producer Mark Burg today about the deal. Here's a clip from the interview:

"What we're going to do with it is bring it to 2010," says Burg. "Make it current day and come up with a new story that takes some of the basic plot points, if you will, and make it a current day movie. I don't want to make another Chainsaw in the '70s, that doesn't thrill me."
Hmm ... I'm so-so on this. A remake of a remake from 2003? Really?

The '03 version was set in the 70's? I don't remember that.

Regardless, I don't get that being the idea for them doing another one. What can that possibly bring to the franchise? Why not just drop Leatherface in the hood or put him in space while we are at it? Worked for Leprauchan, right? If we're going to go ridiculous, let's go ALL THE WAY.

Well, I'm surprised Michael Bay let it go. I figured he was getting all these properties to do a giant showdown film.

I read about this earlier. I'm not sure if it's really a reboot or just a present-day set sequel. I got the impression that this is a 35-years-later kind of a deal. If that's the case, they'd have to decide whether to follow the events of the original or the remake. Or I guess they could be ambiguous about that. Then again, Leatherface did lose an arm in the remake, which automatically makes a follow up problematic.

And if this does end up being a reboot, well, so what. This franchise has been rebooted 3 times already. It's kind of par for the course.

Regardless of what this ends up being continuity-wise, I'm still excited to see another Leatherface movie.

Well as a logical viewer I would assume Leatherface would be dead by modern times but then again does common sense matter to studios?

Not necessarily. He would be in his late 50s/early 60s. Slap that mask on him, and it could work just fine. I dunno, we'll see what they have in mind before too long I'm sure.

I loved the last two Bay produced movies, hopefully the new one will be on par with it.

I like the movies. Yet the story itself is what is troubling to me. Why is Hollywood making a movie of a real sadistic and twisted criminal.

Its only making the guy famous (as if celebrating a crime).

Thanks for heads orlando.

Well
[Show spoiler]he's also missing an arm
That's what I liked about the remake gave us a sense of satisfaction yet retained the original effect. The only problem I have with that movie is the excessive gore, a little too much.

It's not really based on a particular person, it's just an amalgamation of a few seriel killers who the mainstream audience aren't probably familiar with.

TCM is so loosely based on Ed Gein, it shouldn't even count, if that's what you're referring to.

As for Twisted Pictures picking it up...I don't know, I don't think it's just going to be ramped up gore (which I'm fine with) and dumbed down plot (I know, I know, I'm crazy for expecting any sort of plot in a slasher franchise).

Just found this on /arrow.

http://www.joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=18804

ShockTillYouDrop got a chance to sit down with Twisted Pictures honcho Mark Burg and pick his brain (literally?!) about the next chapter in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE saga, which Twisted just acquired the rights to last week (it will be in 3D, natch). Among other things, the producer spoke a little about what the plot entails. Read on!

We're coming up with the idea. It's a 'what if?' It's 35 years later, there's a relative going back. Why is he going back? I don't want to set it in a dusty town. How do we make it more urban but keep that feel. There will be some relatives, some new people. There's still the subtext of are they eating these people? The whole idea of cannibalism, we're bringing it back."

Sounds like the Leatherface we know and love will be no more. (Unless the dude's gonna be about 80 in the new flick.) I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "make it more urban" idea, but I guess we can only stare at the same dusty shacks so many times. As long as we're not talking about LEATHERFACE IN DA HOOD, I'll keep an open mind.

A remake from '03 version? This is getting stupid and ridiculous. Whats the difference?

Its time for a face palm. I don't know how to do one, so will someone just do one.

It almost hilarious how many people actually believe this is a true story...

I don't know how to do one either but I think the admins or whoever is in charge here should create a facepalm smiley to add to the list.

Why not have a property developer buy the land, the family have died off... Leatherface is alone and the law sieze's the land and sells it on, construction moves in and the carnage begins...

then you could have a twisted ending where the developer makes a faustian deal with leatherface... the development continues with minimal carnage and then, FRESH MEAT... a constant supply as the town begins to thrive...

or something super silly like that

I like this idea. Super silly, should fit in nicely with the other remade remakes.

I actually just rewatched TCM: The Beginning, and Leatherface was born in 1939. So, if this new one followed the continuity of the last 2 films, that would make Leatherface at least 70 years old now. Not quite as threatening...

Honestly, a re-do is not that big a deal in this franchise. It's been rebooted 3 times already. I think it might be interesting if this new one was a direct follow up to Hooper's original that ignored all the others. That could work.

Director in Talks for 'Leatherface 3D'

Quote:
Bloody Disgusting got exclusive word that John Luessenhop is in talks to direct Lionsgate's Leatherface 3D, the sequel to the Platinum Dunes produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake that was released via New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Luessenhop directed the 2010 Takers starring Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Matt Dillon.

Debra Sullivan, Adam Marcus and Stephen Susco have turned in drafts the third Chainsaw flick that supposedly picks up immediately where Tobe Hooper's original left off before flashing forward 35 years.
