Default PS3 and increased BDP1000 sales showing in my BB

Since the ps3 launched we have also sold about 6-7 Bdp1000's currently we are completely sold out (we usually sell 1 per week) we now sold about 7 in 10 days!!!, and now we have ps3's out there in pretty solid numbers, and the BDPS1 arrived on tonights truck (4 units)....

Well, today for the first time on a launch day we sold out of a blu-ray title on the first day. Thats right, Superman returns...GONE! Granted we only got a few copies...but this is a first.

But what I am also noticing is that the Blu-Ray area is getting decent traffic through it now. An area that was once virtually untouched, now requires daily laserlining and re-alphabetizing. I have also noticed several titles out of stock, and alot of titles that we had 4 or 5 of now down to 1 copy. Before we'd sell a few titles a week, now it's gotten to the point where I can't keep track of how many we sold anymore. This IMO is the first signs of the "Real Launch" and IMO the ps3 making an impact on movie sales.

Just thought I'd share that little fun fact with you guys!

Did Superman sell out as well? I couldn't find it at my local Best Buy, just Superman II. I managed to get Superman Returns from Target. So I'm missing one Blue Cheese title.

As much as I respect you Brian I *hate* going into one of your stores.

Well, CC was sold out of all the Supes titles (I got the LAST copy of "Returns") and went to the nearby BB to pick up the others. While I was there I figured might as well get "Under Siege" and "The Searchers". They had "II Donner Cut" but no copies of the original. One clerk went and checked inventory (after I convinced him it was indeed released today) and it showed NO BB's got any.

Needless to say I put the other discs down, went home and ordered from Amazon.

I have a question. What's "laserlining"? Sounds innocuous.

Good news Brian, thanks for the report.

I think it makes a lot of sense. If you were interested in BD stand-alones, and felt the PS/3 was critical to the ultimate success of the format, you might hold off purchasing until the news was in about the PS/3 as a BD player.

The news is basically that the PS/3 is darn good, so the entry level is there and therefore some buyers maybe are now comfortable making the investment in the Sammy and other decks.

Very, very good news for BD if the PS/3 is actually selling the stand-alones. Wow, won't a certain element hate that concept?

Is the Sony BDPS1 $999 SRP?

Gary

Good news I watched Superman's return yesterday and although PQ was impressive the movie itself sucked IMHO.

Thanks for the report Brian. Quick question: How many PS3s is your store been getting? Any regular re-supplies?

It depends on the particular BB store... Our store usually gets 16-20 60gb and 18-24 20gb. Other stores in the area get 4 60gb and 10 20 gb.

This sounds about in line with this article:

Notice this quote:

At Virgin Megastores, HD DVD had been outselling Blu-ray nearly four to one, but the gap narrowed last week to three to one, said divisional merchandise manager Bart Saunt.
Once again, this is great news for HD DVD!

Superman Returns on Blu-ray was sold out at the two Future Shops in my area. They had HD DVD copies left.
BB hadn't received their shipment yet, perhaps today.

This is great!
Microsoft is going to have to lower the price of their add-on HD DVD player (from $200), if they seriously expect that format to compete with Bluray now!

Quite an achievement considering the $35 price tag!

That said, only one Best Buy near my Zip has this disc in stock. The other 6 or so are sold out.
