100% depends on casting and what changes they do or do not make. That will determine if it has a chance or not. The first live action film from way back wasnt really that good but it at least tried to stay somewhat true to the cartoon.

Definitely curious about this one. Scooby Doo was one of the first cartoons/franchises I fell in love with as a kid, watching all the old reruns. I have a soft spot for the 2 live action movies, moreso the 2nd one, as it skews a little closer to the show. I saw the other direct-to-video live action movies, and they're not quite as good. The cast did the best they could, I think, but you just can't beat the movie cast.

I think for me it's a matter of tone. With Berlanti producing, I'm sure that means it'll skew a little darker and edgier. But I hope and pray it doesn't become Riverdale with Scooby Doo. I'm fine with a darker tone, and dare I say I'd even be fine with some romance. I'd love it if they did updated spins on some of the classic villains, and I'd even be down for more season-long arcs like Mystery Incorporated. But if it just becomes a cheesy, wacky, crazy soap opera like Riverdale, to the point that it becomes a laughing stock among fans and casual viewers alike, then I'd rather they just not.

I doubt it will be too soapy like Riverdale as this is a mystery show. It shouldn’t be any soapy that the DC shows were.

At least one character will be gay I’m sure since this is a Berlanti show.

I mean, Velma is the obvious choice.

I'm hoping for something more akin to the DC shows as well- cheesy and campy, which I'm fine with, as that at least feels close to the original source material. I'll give it a choice either way, as I've been wanting a new Scooby show for a while, but if it skews into soap opera territory, I may have to bail.

I think the real question is- are they gonna have Scooby talk and embrace the absurdity, or make him a real dog and keep him mute? Or some weird hybrid, where only Shaggy can understand him because he's mentally ill or something? With these shows, you never know.

As long as the show is good and the characters are true to who they are I won't care about any diverse casting or making Velma gay. However if they turn it into hating on men and or white people they can shove it.

But, if the characters are not cast properly, how can they be true to the original characters? Just seems that the right way to cast is to get people that look like the original characters. Like the first live action film did.

I also dont see how the sexuality of any character could possibly play into the story line or be anything important to the plot of a scooby doo movie. It’s just a kids cartoon, isn’t it. Id think they'd be involved in some mystery based adventure with the usual quirks and silliness of the cartoon with a little bit of grown-up humor thrown in. Something like that.

Fred and Daphne in nearly every iteration of Scooby Doo.

Right - but it doesnt really mean or add much. They are a couple, maybe, sort of... fine.

The fun parts of Scooby Doo like the zany adventures, the Shaggy/Scoob interactions, the crazy monsters or ghosts, solving the mystery, etc. is what makes it Scooby Doo.

If this stays true to the characters and looks promising, then Ill see it.

It might not. The nice thing is that most of us will know what to expect and if the BS is slathered on right off the bat then you just avoid it. Easy peezy. .

That didn't help the first live action film, it was terrible.

I know - it was a bad movie. But, the cast they picked out certainly seemed legit. It at least had potential. The concern here is that they go all in on "diversifying" it to the point of UN-recognizableness.

A good movie is a good movie though and a bad one is a bad one regardless of cast, no doubt.

Now that show is a perfect example of what not to do. As for the diverse casting, I'm just used to it and expect it but that doesn't mean it can't still be good casting. As for Velma being gay I can almost 100% guarantee there will be LGBT characters in this and as others have said Velma makes the most sense.

Why do I have the feeling it's just going to be Velma but live-action, Hollywood isn't fixed yet. It still have a lot of DEI criteria in it.

I am pretty sure only Shaggy can understand Scooby. Scooby only addresses Shaggy by name.

I still think the casting has to visually represent the actual characters the best they can. That first live action film did just that, albeit the movie was bad. However, if there are major race and or gender swaps then we don’t have Scooby nothing. We have a made up new thing. May as well call it: "A dog and some random people solve a mystery" movie. .

The only thing that makes sense to me is to create a fun Scooby doo film that follows the expectations of anyone that knows the original show. Outside of that, nah, no thanks.

Well, it might be just that in which case the suck level has already redlined. We dont know for sure of course but we have been trained for certain things, haven’t we?
