Criterion The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

Quote:
An angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched into stardom by this glorious musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.

Not surprising. I've seen this movie referred to A LOT in discussions of La La Land.

Makes perfect sense but that's a lot expecting people to buy this Young Girls of Rochefort and La La land same day. But I get why they did it

Without the Demy boxset from Criterion there would be no La La Land from Chazelle. Demy's films had the most significant impact on the making of the film over the years of its production.

You're forgetting a key dead format.

All the way from Laserdisc to a boxset and now an individual release. Can't say I like the BD cover though.

Of course just when I imported the UK release.

P.S Makes sense to release it the same day La La Land releases on BD

I'm not the biggest fan of the cover either, but I'm happy it's getting a standalone release. I would have preferred this to be the cover (cropped).

Good to see a standalone edition. Maybe it will expose the film to people who haven't had previous experience with Demy.

I've been wanting to check this out after hearing so much about it in La La Land articles and discussion. For the right price I may just buy it blind.

Unfortunately, I tuned into TCM 40 minutes into this movie, but my god is it gorgeous. Blu-ray is definitely on the Wishlist now...

I don't watch musicals.

I'm too busy bowhunting, chopping firewood and going to Ted Nugent concerts.

...because I'm a man.

Noticed it on earlier as well.

It's on Filmstruck along with 6 other Demy films if you're not anti-streaming

I know you're just kidding around, but I always found it funny when people dismiss musicals as gay or unmanly. I mean, I feel pretty secure in my manhood knowing I'd much rather look at Cyd Charisse's legs than Chuck Norris's matted hairy chest anyday.

All three were assumed to be adult films.

Ditto !

On a side note CC's nephew was a fraternity brother of mine in college. He was a couple of years older.
