United Kingdom The Famous Five (err... Nicolas Winding Refn, June 2024)

Never heard of it. Why is there no fat kid on the cover? The times they are a-changin'.

I don't think Enid Blyton would approve.

Saw about 10 mins of this over Christmas. Very hammy but probably decently fun for kids.

Refn has always taken a couple “for hire” gigs over his career so it’s not too surprising he’s done this, granted his name as provocateur auteur has grown exponentially over the last decade that this does feel a little beneath him.

Pretty annoying this gets a Blu from BBC over stuff like Small Axe though.

People forget Refn has history with British tv, having directed a couple of episodes of Marple back in the day.

I watched the first one. It was a fun kids adventure, even if the villain looked like one of those kids playing adults from Bugsy Malone.

Considering it's a period piece, the '80s synth score & neon opening credits were baffling choices by Refn, but I guess they're pretty much his way of putting his stamp on the show. Nothing else about it would make you think he had anything to do with it.

Refn is a showrunner and a production company, not the director.

Refn has no sense of humour.

Best watching that.
