United Kingdom Plein soleil (Purple Noon)

René Clément's classic Plein soleil a.k.a Purple Noon (1960) is set to be released on Blu-ray on September 5th (though not confirmed yet, apparently as part of the Studio Canal Collection, together with Emir Kusturica's Arizona Dream).

Nice, thanks for the info.

I seen this in a special screening years ago (no not on the first release ) and it had someone important taking questions after it. Who that was I don't recall but the film looked magnificent on the big screen and in the same week I watched the restored Le Mépris at the cinema too. Amazing.

Would love some (or any!) decent special features. Sure I heard about a Japan release of this too.

Great art.

Perhaps not exactly a remake, another adaptation of the book. There was also a TV version in the 1950s but I haven't seen that. See also The American Friend and Ripley's Game, both adaptations of Highsmith's book Ripley's Game. Barry Pepper also appeared as Ripley in a mediocre adaptation of Ripley Under Ground. Radio 4 did excellent versions of all five books with Ian Hart as Ripley a couple of years ago

This is great news! I'll buy this no matter what, but I really do hope that this will be part of the StudioCanal Collection. Pro-B - do you know any more information with regards the SC Collection? Are there likely to be more titles released at the same time? (as I think they released in batches of 5 or 6 last time)

I sold my DVD recently, but I didn't think we'd got a Blu-ray release this soon. I just hope it has some extra features and decent subtitles.

As for The Talented Mr. Ripley, I'm surprised Paramount hasn't released that one yet. Pretty much everyone in the cast is still fairly popular and successful these days(Damon, Law, Paltrow, Hoffman, Blanchett, even Jack Davenport). There were a fair amount of extras on the DVD too, so Anthony Minghella's recent passing shouldn't be an issue in that regard.

I didn't like The Talented Mr. Ripley then I liked it and now I don't know. I'd certainly pick up a Blu-ray though for another look. It could be a bit mixed up with Miramax's sell off so I'm not sure who would release it where and when.

Never seen Ripley's Game as it looks unappealing in the extreme. "From the director of Golan-Globus/Cannon's The Berlin Affair" comes to mind. A tagline I'm sure they didn't use

I may be wrong.

Hopefully this will be remastered - the Miramax DVD looks horrible.

Sorry, RDA, missed your question.

Optimum are trying to balance their output -- British classics/Ealing, European classics/World Cinema, contemporary films/blockbusters. Plein soleil appears to be prepared to be part of the Studio Canal Collection, together with Arizona Dream. I will do my best to have a firm answer for you next week.

-----------
On the other hand, Cross of Iron, which is coming up soon, is basically a Optimum/Kinowelt release (just like many Studio Canal Collection titles were; in fact, this was a title which was initially planned to be part of the Collection). Don't miss it. It uses a brand new transfer (new restoration). Optimum are also bringing Ice Cold in Alex. Fantastic film, also a lovely transfer.

Thanks for the info once again pro-b! I've got a lot of great Optimum blu-rays and so I will definitely be checking out 'Cross Of Iron' in particular.

"Plein Soleil" is one of those older movies that was just MADE for Blu-Ray. The colors in it absolutely pop, even on my old VHS version -- so I'm expecting a blu-ray at 1080p to be absolutely stunning. And I've been dying for a "Talented Mr Ripley" Blu release -- it's another one of those movies that will look stunning on Blu. Yay!

What are the chances of this being Region A friendly? I've been craving this film forever. The Miramax DVD is dreadful. I wish Criterion would get the rights to it.

Same here; I am craving Le Samourai (Criterion this year?), Purple Noon, and Rocco and His Brothers on Blu ray the most. Purple Noon and Rocco have terrible U.S. DVD releases and cry out for a remastered Blu ray release.

If this title is REGION A friendly I will definiately get it.

It looks like this has been delayed; my Amazon pre order now lists no street date and message I will be advised when it is ready to ship.
