Am I correct that the StudioCanal release has HDR and this one is only SDR?

That sucks. I'll stick with the Studio Canal UHD then.

The extras do look better on this. It has a different documentary, but one focused specifically on the making of The Trial. Plus an audio commentary.

I have a copy of Filming The Trial on my Gary Graver disc from Gold Ninja Video. I'm glad to see it get an official release.

I want to see comparisons between this and the Studio Canal disc. The Seventh Seal had HDR and by all accounts it wasn't much of a difference. We'll see if that's the case here.

Disappointing Criterion doesn't provide HDR for this one considering StudioCanal did.

The cover art design is awesome. I’ll likely pick this up, though I haven’t seen the movie.

For those who haven't seen it, just remember that Welles' post-production process at this point was...not terribly exact.

The sound on the disc is going to seem rough, maybe even horrible, but much like Chimes at Midnight, it's the best Welles could do with the technology and financial limitations he had.

One of my favorite Welles films, if not my favorite. Anthony Perkins is amazing, and the cinematography is stunning. Glad to have a decent domestic version finally available. But, as others have mentioned, I wouldn't expect a miracle restoration here, especially with the audio.

I remember having to track this one down on VHS way back when, as I was going through my "Welles Phase" of my 20's. Really loved it then, haven't seen it since. Looking forward to the revisit.

I'd never seen The Trial until I acquired the StudioCanal 4k release. Once Anthony Perkins leaves the opening location it becomes a strange and fascinating journey with fantastic choices in real existing locations and the way it's all captured through the cinematography is quite something to see. The 4k restoration and transfer really captures all of that wonderfully. Definitely worth buying if you're a fan of Orson Welles' work.

Never seen the film but the novel is one of my favs. I will get the UHD and read the novel again since it has been awhile.

Finally!!! Wild to go from having no good domestic release of this movie in any format to suddenly having it on Criterion 4K! Wild and very, very welcome. This is one of my favorite Welles films. Looking forward to seeing Filming "The Trial" finally, too!

Day one.
