Default Best Speakers for a Sony S550?

I'm looking for a good set of 5.1 Blu-ray speakers for my Sony BDP-S550, which will be played on a Panasonic Plasma model: TX-P42G20B.

I was looking them up and thought "Wow those are expensive", then realised they all come with Blu-ray players! I just want the speakers, not the Blu-ray player.

Also to be a bit more specific, two front speakers that look something like this:

Don't want anything to bulky.

And two rear speakers which i can hang up on the wall.

Any help pointing me in the right direction is much appreciated

What are you powering these speakers with?

I've worked in HT sales for 3 years now and I have never heard someone ask..."what speakers go with my Bluray player?"

Yea that baffles me also. OP are you looking at packaged deals?

The Sony S550 is sold separately. You can buy whatever speakers you so choose to. What are you powering them with and what is your budget?

Glad I wasn't the only one scratching my head. What's powering them and what is your budget?

Im going to guess that the OP is looking for a HTiB, and if that is the case, I guess the Onkyo systems tend to have the highest ratings....

However, OP, I think you would be much better served looking into seperate speakers and a Receiver.

Again, what is your budget? If your budget is $500 then you will have very limited options. And should focus on just a receiver and the Left and Right speakers first, then add as you go. For a full setup, I think you need to look at a budget near $1000-1500 for a proper entry level setup.

My knowledge in new technology isn't great, so i do apologise

What exactly is a reciever?

And would i have to buy this aswell as the speakers?

Well i'd imagine i'd power them by plugging it in :L

Also i don't want to go overboard with the price. Budget would be around £300-500. Just a decent set of 5.1 speakers which will enhance the sound compared to the puney in-built tv ones, but still pack a punch

A receiver is a box that allows you to attach all the components such as CD player, DVD player, cable/sattellite box, BD player, and VCR to the inputs of it. You also connect the video output of the receiver to the TV and the audio outputs of the receiver to speakers. A receiver basically has 4 funtions:
  1. Audio/Video switching to switch from a CD player to DVD or from cable/satellite TV to the BD player.
  2. Radio such as AM/FM.
  3. An amplifier to amplify the sound and send them to the speakers.
  4. A processor to process audio codecs such as Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc. The processor inside the receiver can also enhance the video from 480 to 1080 resolution.
To receive the maximum benefit from surround sound available on DVD's and blu-ray movies, you need 5 or 7 speakers and a subwoofer.
