Of all the Scream announcements yesterday, this one has me the most excited.
First saw this at 14 in the Summer of 1979 and absolutely adored it. As a 70s "monster kid" weaned on watching the old Universal and Hammer films (and all things vampire) on TV, it was incredible to see a lavish, widescreen take on Stoker with such magnificent gothic production design and such a commanding and charismatic Dracula in Frank Langella. I haven't seen this in anything approximating its original color since the early 80s pan-and-scan LaserDisc. Always thought it was a shameful disservice to Gil Taylor's beautiful cinematography to rob it of its visual vitality with that awful color-drained transfer that's been an eyesore since the 1991 LaserDisc. Taylor worked with Kubrick and Hitchcock, shot several early Polanski films and lensed two of the most iconic films of the 70s with THE OMEN and STAR WARS. So satisfying that this long overdue restoring of the original color is being undertaken. Here's hoping some new supplements will include input from the lovely Kate Nelligan (absent from the otherwise top-notch retrospective done for the 2004 DVD), as she remains my favorite Lucy in the hallowed history of versions of Dracula ![]() |

I'd have thought it was the other way around. A new transfer with the desaturation tastefully done could have looked great & been a fine compliment to the full colour version ...but I'm not complaining.
I new the desaturated transfer was old, but I didn't know it was as ancient as 1991! I'd like to know more about the new transfer. Last edited by CinemaScope; 07-21-2019 at 02:14 PM. |

This is such awesome news.
What Badham did to DRACULA was as wretched as someone colorizing B&W movies back in the 80s IMO. The film was shot specifically for a wide color pallet, and he tried after the fact to adjust it to suit his own revisionist tastes. What he did really was drain the original artistic intent that the DP and he had at the time of its production. That vision has been totally out of circulation since the 80s and has never been seen in widescreen on home video ever. Fan edits tried to make adjustments, but there's only so much you can do to restore something that's been drained totally out of the image. This is marvelous news and should restore this film to the select group of best Dracula adaptations more than ever. |

This has never been my favourite Dracula, I always thought Langella's look was influenced a bit too much by Tony Manero for my liking, but just looking at the screencaps for the extant release has got me really interested in revisiting this again, particularly for that gothic atmosphere and production design. The fact that they are restoring the proper colour is worthy of praise because that washed-out look hurts my eyes.
I was just thinking that I've seen more movie versions of the original Bram Stoker story than any other filmed story - 10 in total (Nosferatu '22, Dracula '31, Spanish Version '31, Hammer '58, Count Dracula '70, Dan Curtis '73, Dracula '79, Nosferatu '79, Coppola '92 and Brooks' spoof Dead and Loving It '95) |

I respect the director's intentions with his drained version (even though I think it looks awful) so I'm glad this will include both the original theatrical color scheme and the 1991 and up one. I never bought the the blu-ray because I own the DVD and didn't think it was worth an upgrade for the drained version, but I absolutely will buy one that looks like the original version.
