Default Dracula (1979) (Collector's Edition)

Dracula Blu-ray

Quote:
***DRACULA (1979) (Collector’s Edition) Update***

Throughout history, Dracula has filled the hearts of men with fear and the hearts of women with desire. In this stylish production of Bram Stoker’s classic gothic horror tale, Frank Langella reprises his electrifying, award-winning stage performance as the bloodthirsty Count Dracula as he goes in search of his ultimate bride. Meanwhile, the renowned and relentless vampire hunter, Professor Van Helsing (Sir Laurence Olivier), seeks to end the dark prince’s reign of terror over the citizens of Transylvania. Directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever), featuring an all-star cast and a superbly atmospheric score by the great John Williams, DRACULA (1979) is an unforgettable adaption of one of the most enduring horror legends of all time.

Details we have on our release at the moment are as follows:

• National street date for North America (Region A) is November 26th.
• As announced earlier, this is being presented as a 2-Disc Blu-ray Collector’s Edition and will come guaranteed with a slipcover in its first three months of release.
• Includes a new HD transfer of the theatrical version as seen in theaters in 1979 with full color as well as the alternate director-approved version of the film created in 1991 for home video with a muted color palette.
• The newly commissioned artwork you see pictured comes to us from artist Mark Maddox (Dracula: Prince of Darkness). This art will be front-facing and the reverse side of the wrap will feature the original theatrical artwork.
• New and existing extras will be announced on a later date.

Pre-order now directly from us @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/p…/drac...edition…
The first 500 orders from our site will receive an exclusive limited-edition 18” x 24” rolled poster of the exclusive new illustration.

To raise the stakes, we’ll be releasing a Collector’s Edition and a Steelbook™ (both with the same content) simultaneously on the same date. Expected release: Nov or Dec 2019.

• BODY PARTS (1991) – After losing his arm in a car accident, a criminal psychologist has it replaced with a limb that belonged to a serial killer. Jeff Fahey (The Lawnmower Man) stars in Eric Red’s (Bad Moon) underrated flick. Expected Release: Jan 2020.

• DR JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE (1971) – This gender-bending excursion from Hammer Films is quite the trip! Ralph Bates stars in this thriller directed by Roy Ward Baker (The Vampire Lovers). Expected Release: Dec 2019.

Expected Release: Nov 2019.

• THE FAN (1981) – This often-overlooked ’80s slasher film (which originally came out in theaters the same month as The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, Graduation Day and Happy Birthday to Me) stars Michael Biehn (Aliens) playing a deranged admirer who sets his sights on a Broadway star (screen legend Lauren Bacall). Score by Pino Donaggio (Dressed to Kill). Expected Release: Nov 2019.

• THE FLY COLLECTION – The insect-morphing franchise buzzes into town in a complete set that includes the original terrors The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), Curse of the Fly (1965) as well as the horrifying reboots The Fly (1986) and The Fly II (1989). We’re setting this packaging up just like we did recently for Critters and The Omen collections (Rigid slipcase, individual cases). Expected Release: Dec 2019.

So if you didn’t see one of your favorites here, it may very well be in progress for near year and announced in the future.

If you've made it this far, we definitely want to take this moment to sincerely thank you guys for the support and love during the last 7 seven years of Scream Factory. It’s a rollercoaster of a brand as you know…and we couldn’t do it without you! ❤

Of all the Scream announcements yesterday, this one has me the most excited.

First saw this at 14 in the Summer of 1979 and absolutely adored it. As a 70s "monster kid" weaned on watching the old Universal and Hammer films (and all things vampire) on TV, it was incredible to see a lavish, widescreen take on Stoker with such magnificent gothic production design and such a commanding and charismatic Dracula in Frank Langella. I haven't seen this in anything approximating its original color since the early 80s pan-and-scan LaserDisc.

Always thought it was a shameful disservice to Gil Taylor's beautiful cinematography to rob it of its visual vitality with that awful color-drained transfer that's been an eyesore since the 1991 LaserDisc. Taylor worked with Kubrick and Hitchcock, shot several early Polanski films and lensed two of the most iconic films of the 70s with THE OMEN and STAR WARS. So satisfying that this long overdue restoring of the original color is being undertaken.

Here's hoping some new supplements will include input from the lovely Kate Nelligan (absent from the otherwise top-notch retrospective done for the 2004 DVD), as she remains my favorite Lucy in the hallowed history of versions of Dracula

I'd have thought it was the other way around. A new transfer with the desaturation tastefully done could have looked great & been a fine compliment to the full colour version ...but I'm not complaining.

I new the desaturated transfer was old, but I didn't know it was as ancient as 1991! I'd like to know more about the new transfer.

This is such awesome news.

What Badham did to DRACULA was as wretched as someone colorizing B&W movies back in the 80s IMO. The film was shot specifically for a wide color pallet, and he tried after the fact to adjust it to suit his own revisionist tastes. What he did really was drain the original artistic intent that the DP and he had at the time of its production. That vision has been totally out of circulation since the 80s and has never been seen in widescreen on home video ever.

Fan edits tried to make adjustments, but there's only so much you can do to restore something that's been drained totally out of the image.

This is marvelous news and should restore this film to the select group of best Dracula adaptations more than ever.

The original unedited post didn't mention this release would have the original color timing.

This is great news. As a few others have said, this is by far the best of the announcements SF made at ComicCon.

Couldn’t be happier, this has been a most wanted occurrence for years. Between this and cracking the Paramount vortex, Scream/Shout’s stock just spiked for me personally.

Last year we got the complete score for the film which we thought for years the tapes were lost and only a bad sounding mono tape existed and now the film will finally get the same treatment.

This has never been my favourite Dracula, I always thought Langella's look was influenced a bit too much by Tony Manero for my liking, but just looking at the screencaps for the extant release has got me really interested in revisiting this again, particularly for that gothic atmosphere and production design. The fact that they are restoring the proper colour is worthy of praise because that washed-out look hurts my eyes.

I was just thinking that I've seen more movie versions of the original Bram Stoker story than any other filmed story - 10 in total (Nosferatu '22, Dracula '31, Spanish Version '31, Hammer '58, Count Dracula '70, Dan Curtis '73, Dracula '79, Nosferatu '79, Coppola '92 and Brooks' spoof Dead and Loving It '95)

I'm happy they are finally releasing this with the original color, but honestly this film just didn't entertain me. I know there are a lot of fans; congratulations to them!

I respect the director's intentions with his drained version (even though I think it looks awful) so I'm glad this will include both the original theatrical color scheme and the 1991 and up one. I never bought the the blu-ray because I own the DVD and didn't think it was worth an upgrade for the drained version, but I absolutely will buy one that looks like the original version.

Yes, I will be getting this for sure. I saw this in the theater and the color cinematography by Gil Taylor was gorgeous. So glad this version is seeing the light of day.
