Default Why do you collect Blu-rays?

I personally collect blu-rays because I want to see particular films in great quality, along with the now easy access to films in general nowadays.

What do you guys think?

I like agree with your view. Personally, Blu-ray offers movie collectors the means to own the movies we love in the highest possible quality. Mind you studios would rather have us own rights (stored up in some mythical cloud ) and not the physical movies, because...it cost them less and it restricts our rights .

At times a DVD might have a little something that is missing from the Blu-ray edition, but 99% of the time the Blu-ray is superior in terms of PQ and AQ...and that is not even debatable.

Default Seriously ...is this a trick question?

I enjoy my film and television library because they are my chosen art form. The same way other people can stand in a museum and stare at a single painting or piece of sculpture for hours, I can watch films ("2001: A Space Odyssey", "A Clockwork Orange", "The Godfather", "The Godfather: Part II", "Blade Runner", "Pulp Fiction", "Halloween", "Apocalypse Now", "Frankenstein", "The African Queen", "Schindler's List", "The Shining", "Reservoir Dogs", "Grave of the Fireflies", "Inception", "Seven Samurai", "Psycho", "Goodfellas", "Network", "Infernal Affairs", "The Terminator", "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Ninth Configuration", "Taxi Driver", "Midnight Cowboy", "The Dark Knight", "Donnie Darko", "Alien", "Aliens", etc...), and television shows ("Breaking Bad", "Utopia", "Deadwood", "Doctor Who", "The Newsroom", "The Walking Dead", "Sons of Anarchy", etc...), 4, 5, 6 times or more. I've watched many films more than 10 times. Each time I view a television or film favorite I focus on something new... acting, direction, cinematography, scoring, editing, etc...

A great film or television show is a miracle, because unlike a painting or sculpture which are produced by a single artist, film and television are a collaborative effort ...which means there's always a thousand things that can go wrong. If the directing or acting or cinematography, editing and/or scoring is faulty (not to mention the screenplay, set design, etc...) then the entire project can be compromised if not entirely destroyed. With all the 'notes' from studio suits, as well as PG-13 issues, and with all of the other things that can potentially go wrong ...well it's kind of a miracle that we even get any classic films and television shows from that particular mix of inspired madness and mayhem that is the entertainment industry.

But every once in a while, those glorious mad men do manage to get it right.

I collect blu-rays because they allow me to appreciate (from an audio-visual standpoint) that which I truly have a special place in my heart for.

I collect blu-rays because I love film and television.

Because in Papua New Guinea, we only have one TV channel, limited Internet (so no Netflix or other streaming video) and no Blockbusters or Redboxes to rent from.

The opportunity to build a library of what are basically presentation-quality digital prints of films for a price comparable to that of an album is what 30+ years of home video has been building towards.

Simply because I love movies and good television series. I have certain friends that make fun of me for actually buying the blu rays. "Why do you spend the money? Just download it." I've only been collecting for a few months but I'll admit, I do spend a lot of cash. But to me it's worth it. I want the highest quality of video and audio which you don't get from downloading. If you want a product, support it and pay for it. Also, I enjoy the collecting aspect and building a library. It's definitely my hobby which is a lot better than what I used to do and spend my extra cash on. Trust me. It's funny though, those same friends ALWAYS have a movie of mine on loan to them. So they make fun of my hobby, but then always ask to borrow a blu ray.

I agree with you all the way. I was reading all the posts and thinking of my reasons and you nailed it. This is what we have been waiting for.

The question, screw 4k for now, can the quality get better, I'm talking so good that we would all drop thousands of $$$$$ AGAIN for the same titles AGAIN?

I dunno if I could concvince myself to do that, seeing that I'm over $10k on blu rays alone

I'm a movie lover. I developed a greater appreciation for film in film study classes in High School & College. I began my collection when a few VHS movies became available in Widescreen/Letterbox. I finally could rewatch favorites w/o TV commercials or pan & scan! When DVD came out & dropped in price from $1,000+ players to a few hundred, I switched to DVD. Replaced many VHS tapes with wide screen DVDs & added many titles. Once BD won the format war I went High Def in 2009 & upgraded to a home theater & picked up a few BDs.
Over the next few years with so many sales & great web sites like this one I have expanded my collection & replaced many DVDs. Most of my BDs cost me $10 or under. Typically see films in the theater & purchase ones I rate 2.5/4 or higher at the right price. Rarely blind buy BDs. I never buy a BD soon after release at the high price.

FYI:

▪ 1975 - Year Beta launched
▪ 1976 - Year VHS launched
▪ 1977 - Magnetic Video, the first home video company to release theatrical films to tape, licenses 50 films from 20th Century Fox for VHS and Betamax release.
▪ 1978 - Year laserdisc launched. MCA issues Universal Studios film library onto laserdisc, and later adds Warner Bros. and Disney product as well.

1994 - MUSE Hi-Vision LaserDisc is launched on May 20, 1994 in Japan. The first consumer high definition video disc.

▪ 1996 - DVD is launched in Japan
▪ 1997 - DVD is launched in the United States

2006 - HD DVD launched on April 18, 2006; Blu-ray Disc launched on June 20. After nearly 30 years, VHS ends as a format for major motion pictures.

2008 - Blu-ray Becomes new video medium after long competition with HD-DVD.

I'm a media collector in general. I own hundreds of DVD's, video games, and comic books.

To me, blu-ray collecting is essential for films where downloading/streaming/or a DVD just isn't enough.

I own Blus because there are some great improvements over Ny previous home video format. Watching a movie for the first time on blu Is a new experience. Every film you see with each viewing is a changing experience because you are a different person . So you might as well see the most honest and beautiful version of that film at the best quality.
A lot of blus have been disappointments and blu Ray in general has not been as consistently impressive as dvd in terms of supplements and titles available (which is most important to me) but every so often a title will come along that makes it all worth it. .

For me it's better PQ, to see films how they were meant to be seen (except for those releases that haven't been handled well). Not to mention better sound and the fact that I can use a pop up menu without having to stop the film.
