From what I can see there was another release of The Fifth Element in German: Amazon

I haven't been able to find much info on it but it looks like it uses the VC-1 codec? Anyone confirm this?

Yes, it uses the VC - Codec and the transfer is excellent; especially if you compare it to the 1st US Release - a definite improvement.

This sounds like the same source mix as the German DVD, which was a very different and far superior mix to the USA releases and Blu-ray mix.

I think I need to investigate this one further....

I would say the german Blu Ray Disc of Fifth Element is the best worldwide.

That's becaus the AQ und PQ is great and it does have A LOT of Special Features.

The US Disc is lacking the special features.

And are these special features playable in U.S. PS3s? In other words, they are not PAL-encoded?

I just wanted to watch my disc now, but the disc isn't readable anymore, tried 3 different playes "check disc", "we are having trouble reading this" ...
