Summer Wars 4K UHD (2009) (GKIDS)

GKIDS will be releasing Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars on 4K tentatively on April 1st! There's an Amazon Exclusive Steelbook listing up right now. I'm not sure if there will also be a standard wide release as well.

Will upgrade the blu-ray, if only to support more potential Hosoda releases so that maybe Wolf Children, my all time favorite animated film, will get a 4K.

This is absolutely gonna be carried by HDR, pretty sure it's a sub-1080 production as far as resolution on the actual animation goes. Also still gonna be an.upgrade over Funi's meh encode on the BD.

As much as I'd be screamed at for saying this... I wonder how this would look if it was "AI" scaled in the same way that Paprika was, especially since Paprika's generally pretty good upscale was from a seemingly lower base resolution with denser more complex art, and I wouldn't doubt they're going back to the DI for the 4K as opposed to the super old 2009 home video master we've been stuck with for so long.

Really don't like the steelbook for this, but I doubt we'll be getting a standard 4K release. I've been itching for a re-watch though and I don't own this, so I'll probably pick it up assuming it's not a botch job.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of the design either but if that's the only way to get the 4K so be it.

I don't like steelbooks for anything But yeah, GKIDS never did a standard for Belle or Evangelion: 3.0+1.11, these won't get it either probably.

The weird thing about steelbooks lately is they're making them the only 4K release, but they're keeping the variant type of artwork. Inside Out 2, Moana 2, this. These would typically be the side artwork but now it's the only version and it just seems cheap to me.

I wish studios would do something where you could show POP and buy a normal case for like $5. When they push the "collectible" version as the only version, it's no longer "collectible."
