According to the September/October 2024 Widescreen Review magazine, Disney is improving its picture quality by offering both Dolby Vision HDR and 100GB for many future 4K Blu-ray disc releases.
Select quotes from page 6 of the September/October 2024 Widescreen Review magazine “Up until the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney has released the vast majority of its films on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc mastered in only the HDR10 high dynamic range format, rather than the Dolby Vision HDR format. Following Deadpool & Wolverine will be Alien: Romulus, and there after on most if not all of Disney’s future 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases.” “Home theatre enthusiasts will appreciate the more accurate HDR pictures that can be achieve by applying Dolby Vision HDR.” “Other studio have been releasing their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases with Dolby Vision as well as HDR10 and in a few instances with HDR10+.” “Disney should also started using 100 GB (rather than 66 GB) discs to further boost picture quality.” https://www.widescreenreview.com/wsr....php?recid=278 |

It's all good to make these statements but so far Disney has released zero catalog titles this year so it doesn't really mean anything at this point.

Sony was part of it since Sony is doing the work for Disney now. Nearly all titles in 2025 will be 100% Sony produced, titles in 2024 and some in early 2025 were already in production under Disney. Deadpool and Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, & Moana 2 will have Dolby Vision on 4K disc. Tron And Tron: Legacy will more than likely only have HDR10 although Legacy’s director Joseph Kosinski wants Dolby Vision.

Can you explain what “HDR in a SDR container” means in plain terms and how wide spread is that?

All I can say is Planet of the Apes 1968-73 in this 'new' format from disney. Kingdom just missed this upgrade. Of course all Fox catalogue titles.
I might be dead before this all happens, but good news all around. John |

If I could trade "Dolby Vision for a few overpriced current shows or movies" with "HDR10 with consistent back-catalogue releases", then I will take the latter.

![]() Still, this has to be considered good news for disc buyers. Disney has a lot of titles under the belt and of course future releases of new films will benefit. |

This HDR vs Dolby Vision rivalry reminds me of the HD DVD vs Blu-ray wars, except both formats still exist and are still competing for dominance. In my experience, the differences between formats is so minuscule that I don’t have a dog in the fight. In other words, I couldn’t care less |

Is this where I bring up that most people, even if they have Dolby Vision capable players and displays and have properly calibrated their displays, frequently cannot tell without the aid of the Dolby Vision logo popping up somewhere on their equipment telling them that it's on, the difference between HDR10 and DV anyway?
Or are unaware there is a difference between the Dolby Vision on their discs and the Dolby Vision on their streams? Branding + FOMO is a powerful, powerful fuel in the home theater business. It makes a lot of things go. |

It means that even though the format allows them to use high dynamic range, they aren't making use of the enhanced capability. To use an old tech analogy, it's sort of like taking a picture of a black-and-white scene using color film. Yes, it's "in color" but there is very little advantage over black-and-white film.
