Default How much improvement would I see with a TV upgrade?

I have the Samsung UN65JS8500 from 2015. It's 120 Hz,4k, with HDR (original hdr I think?). I honestly can't see any difference in my blu rays and 4k discs on this tv. Would upgrading be a night and day difference?

Depending on what you upgrade to, there could be a dramatic amount of difference. OLED & QD-OLED are entirely different display technologies than the backlit LED display you are used to and I guarantee there would be a noticeable improvement. Not to say these displays don’t have their limitations (long panning shots), but I think you might be surprised what Dolby Vision or HDR can achieve on a such a display.

Of course LED has come a long way in this time and the higher end models with a large number of dimming zones can also achieve some great contrast and are generally brighter than OLEDs.

It appears you have a edge lit LCD that was pretty good by 2015 standards. So while it can probably get bright, the contrast and depth are dictated mostly the native contrast of the panel. The light surrounds the image from the edges it's not actually behind it unfortunately.

This is precisely why you don't see much a difference between 4k and bluray. The backlight is unsophisticated and so dynamic range is stuck.

OLED or MiniLED backlit would be the way to go if you seek an upgrade.

I'm in the same boat. I'm still using a Samsung JS8500 55" and it can't quite handle UHD content properly, in particular HDR. Using 4:4:4 on the Sony UBP X800 results in some nasty color banding on the TV image so I have to switch it to 4:2:2. Similar situation with the PS5. Any game where I turn on the HDR results in some nasty color banding onscreen. Much of the time the HDR content on the TV is too dim, especially in scenes with dark lighting or atmosphere.

@libertyeagle20 and @jala12 may I suggest for posting a couple pictures of the room and the wall where the TVs will be located.

Also tell us what content sources you use.

Yes, without a doubt. Your tv is so outdated and wouldnt even match the cheaper $500 tv's. Any OLED/QDOLED would blow it away. It you want to stick to LCD, you will be amazed by the Sony B9 and B7. Same with the Hisense mid and high tier, along with Samsung.

For what its worth, I bought a 65-inch Vizio LED set about 3 years ago, and my recently-purchased 4K discs look awesome on it. I watched The Matrix trilogy, having not seen it in over ten years, and was truly blown away by the color and detail.

If you have a reasonably sized 1080 TV, blu-ray is going to look good for the most part

You get over 65 inches, and you'll start to push the limits of many blu-rays, but certainly not all. Then it depends on what you're playing them on.

I run a relatively small Vizio from over ten years ago. I play on a Sony 4K player. Between early blu-rays and 4K restorations, whether played on blu-ray or 4K (yes 4K has some playback issues on a 1080 TV, but I don't mind off-white whites) I can certainly tell the difference and it's worth the price difference.

I look forward to upgrading to a UHD TV in the future, but for now I don't regret getting the 4K player first.

If you can't see the difference, you're either lucky or fooling yourself

The TV is in the corner of the room with a window right next to it. Of course, the window is usually shuttered when the TV is in use. The TV's HDR brightness issues are still prevalent even at night. And recently, the notorious Samsung "smiles" have begun to appear at the sides of the screen.

The sources that I use for 4K and UHD content is either the Sony UBP X800 player or the PS5. For the 4K player, there is color banding on UHD content if I display at 4:4:4, so I end up having to switch to 4:2:2 to avoid that. But I suspect that doing so means that I'm not getting the full chroma display as well?

For the PS5, I have the video transfer rate set to automatic. There is generally no avoiding the color banding for UHD content in my case here. I can mitigate it a bit by lowering the transfer rate down to -1 or -2, but I think the image quality for games looks worse that way even with the reduced banding.

You're doing everything ^ right, it's a good time to consider a new 2024 TV and if possible upgrade to at least the new 65" class screen size, that is just 56 1/2" in overall width of the outside dimension.

For movies then the chroma is stored at 4:2:0 on the actual discs themselves so no, you're not losing anything by switching to 4:2:2. Samsungs were notorious for choking on 12-bit 4:4:4 output, Pannysonic actually added a 10-bit priority mode to their UHD players because so many people were having trouble with 12-bit 4:4:4.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. One of the TVs I'm considering upgrading to at some point would be the Sony A95L. It's still really expensive so I'll have to wait a while but it has Dolby Vision which I would like to experience (though I'd need a new DV capable player for that). I also hear it has really good peak brightness so hopefully I won't have the same issues with dim HDR lighting as I'm having now on the JS8500.

All of Sony's flagship A95L Master series QD OLED TV screen sizes, 55", 65" & 77" are on sale this week. The 77" A95L goes up $200 this Sunday, October 20th.

You'll do so much better with Sony's A95L any size. Dolby Vision and HDR10 are game changers, most esp. Dolby Vision!! I have both the Panny UB9000 MKII and Reavon X110 4K players with extraordinary DV and HDR10, and they also do standard BDs the very best I've ever seen -- both players are also exquisite DVD upscalers!

And my current TV is actually the Sony A9S Master Series OLED (2022), one generation behind the QD-OLED A95L, but I love the hell out of my Sony A9S! I am already planning an A95L in just a few months, so A95L should be your go-to if and when you can afford it!
