Default Renewable energy and gaming.

I wonder what the future will look like for gaming considering we are moving to renewable energy over the next 10-20 years. Let me explain. Solar and Wind Turbine are intermittent sources of power. The sun only lasts a limited time and it’s not always windy. This means for the national grid to support a renewable energy future, we need a new battery technology that can store energy in these solar farms etc.. Current technology is limited and wouldn’t be able to handle the demands of customers on a mass scale. This means, at the present time, technology doesn’t exist to backup solar farms and turbines to the extent required to move everyone to renewables. This is quite worrying to me as it means we won’t have electricity at our fingertips 24/7. This would obviously mean consoles and PCs would be useless for gaming unless everyone games during the day (impossible if you work).

So, to summarise, we are reliant on the invention of a new battery tech or much much improved solar tech at the very least to secure a long term future for gaming.

Plenty of research and investment is happening but it’s a race against time.

I never see anyone raising concerns about this side of climate change.

Obviously, PS5 and the next Xbox are safe this gen but it’s a concern for after that.

Thoughts please. Do you think scientists and researchers will come up with a battery storage solution or are we doomed to go back to the dark ages when the sun goes down.

I think gaming and conserving energy is like trying to walk in two different directions.

You have to separate the needs from the wants at some point and gaming comes right off the top.

But,... All my games have been in storage for a while so it's easy for me to say that.

Obviously that would extend to all forms of entertainment.

I guess so.... but I have to prioritize

I do like Video Games and do have plenty of them... For one reason or another I have not played in a while.

I still think playing video games then considering saving energy is like burning a candle from both ends.

Maybe our future entertainment will go back to catching fireflies in the back yard.

There's plenty of oil, gas, and coal around to keep electricity good for a while. But yeah eventually that stuff will start running out and even nuclear's life is limited so eventually energy use will have to decrease. Dark ages is one way, but more likely I think the population will just decrease over time with fossil fuel depletion. Gaming is kind of a minor energy expense. Your fridge/freezer, dryer, and especially heat and/or air conditioning are where most of your electricity goes.

I think we're often deliberately fed false and misleading information on what we should and shouldn't do because it consumes X, Y, Z power and gives so much pollution. Yes, i understand resources are finite, but i'm talking from a perspective where we already see manufacturers and so on trying to reduce power consumption whilst increasing efficiency and performance. The other flipside of the coin is that there's a hypocrisy in telling the many to "Do their bit" when it's actually a few major causes from a minority of industries causing the majority of the damage. They're the ones policy should be targeted towards yet somehow it's not easy to go after conglomerates with trillions and lobbying bodies bribing i guess.

Agreed, if a single cruise ship voyage does more damage to the planet than my entire life I start thinking maybe it's not all on me to do my part.

I do enjoy recycling and try to not leave things running when I don't have use for them.

Interesting topic. We will get to a point in time in which non-renewable energy sources will run out and we will fully depend on renewable energy sources. In my opinion Scientists will come up with a sustainable sorce or sources of energy.

In my opinion gaming is not in risk, I dont think that we will lack from energy in the future. And who knows, will we be still using consoles in the future to be actually gaming?

It's pretty much nuclear fusion or bust as far as sustainable energy goes at our current rates of use, and it's anybody's guess whether we can ever develop that. Wind, solar, etc. will never scale up enough to power a world of 8 billion people. Although the population could decline significantly and we could decrease our energy use to subsist on only renewable sources.

But gaming is a drop in the bucket of our energy use so I don't think it will ever be in danger.

Good thing I bought the aftermarket solar panel by Mad Catz for my X-Box Series X... although it does make gaming difficult on cloudy days...

I think with enough investment and innovation, we might find solutions that keep our consoles running smoothly, even after dark.

Platforms such as safe сasino services offer a more energy-efficient alternative. Smartphones use less power than gaming consoles or PCs. So, they are better for a future with power outages. I found https://uk.notgamstop.com/payments/paysafe/ and was wondering. It says transactions are easy and safe. You can use these payment systems without needing heavy hardware. I don't think that gaming is the most critical for the energy system
