USA Caliber 9 (aka Milano Calibro 9) (1972) (New 4K Restoration)

Raro Video (via Kino distribution) will be releasing a new Blu-ray of Fernando Di Leo's Milano Calibro 9 (aka Caliber 9) (1972) on June 13th. The Blu-ray is sourced from a new 4K restoration.

Quote:
Fernando Di Leo’s Italian crime classic Caliber 9 (Milano Calibro 9, 1972) is presented here in a stunning 4K restoration. Small-time gangster Ugo Piazza (Gastone Moschin, The Godfather Part II) has just been released from prison. He tries to convince the police, the mafia, and his one-time associate Rocco (Mario Adorf, The Tin Drum), a sadistic hoodlum who enjoys sick violence and torture, that he wants to go straight, but everyone believes he has $300,000 of stolen money hidden somewhere. Caliber 9’s stylized violence, fast-paced action sequences, tight editing and plot twists prefigure the work of Quentin Tarantino and John Woo. The film also features a notable score by Luis Bacalov (Django) and the stunning Barbara Bouchet (Casino Royale) as Ugo’s go-go dancing girlfriend.

The restoration of Milano Calibro 9 was carried out in 2022 by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale from the negatives made available by Minerva Pictures. To reconstruct the version desired by the director, the title cards were reintegrated, recovered from a copy conserved in the archives of the Cineteca Nazionale

Missed opportunity for a 4k here. The region free Arrow release has an already excellent restoration, and I'm not sure how much this 4k restoration can improve upon that with just a blu.

While this is a great movie, it's odd that it's now had three separate blu-ray releases with three separate transfers and no 4K when I don't think there's more than a couple of these Italian cop movies that even have one transfer upgrade. Ah well. Guess this is good for those who didn't import the Arrow version already. I won't be surprised if it looks better, but that Arrow does still look pretty good and I don't think I need yet another blu-ray of it.

I'd rather they'd remastered the entire first Fernando Di Leo Collection, some of these films look awful.

It's based on an original poster from Italian artist Renato Casaro

He did a few others. This one might have been better

There's an off chance that 1911 might be chambered in .38 super which is the same effective caliber in terms of diameter as 9mm It might be one of those special ones that you don't have to reload, either

No 4k uhd, no bullseye at this range. Another standard blu won't even dent the primer.

Site review up

It's not a win-win upgrade as seen from the screenshots and review. I'm not convinced that the smoother look is purely from a finer scan. Comparing the screenshots where the 3 guys are walking side by side, the leather jacket seems to have nicer texture on the Arrow 2k resto than this new 4k resto.

Seems like worse compression on the Raro. Grain looks better resolved on the Arrow when comparing the other screencaps like these two:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...519&position=7 - Arrow

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...931&position=9 - Raro

The text on the telephone box looks a wee bit sharper on the Arrow screen IMO.

I bought this for cheap not realizing I already had the Arrow somewhere. It looks like the Arrow still wins out, with better colors, grain, compression and less of a yellowish hue.

Now that I have 3 copies of it, maybe I should actually watch it.

Any chance Radiance will be releasing this under the Raro imprint with better encoding and improved color grading?

Doubt it since Arrow has the UK rights, but I'd love it if they did to have a matching milieu trilogy. I was just checking this thread out because I was considering picking up the Arrow import over the Raro.

Ah right of course! I certainly would go for an Arrow 4K but having the whole trilogy from Radiance/Raro would look great on the shelf.

I'm unsure if Arrow still have the rights. It's OOS at their site, and Zavvi, and only being sold by third parties at Amazon UK. Those are often (but not always) tell-tale signs of a title not in print anymore.
