Disney Disney WOW: World of Wonder (2010) (AV Calibration Suite)

Disney's WOW World of Wonder Blu-ray
Disney's WOW World of Wonder Blu-ray Review

Disney WOW World of Wonder Blu-ray

Quote:
Disney to Improve Your HD Pix

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (September 22, 2010) -- Disney is planning to introduce a Blu-ray disc that will help consumers set up their Home Theater systems, including calibrating the best picture for their HDTVs.

The disc, which will be available on November 2, will cost $34.95. A standard-definition DVD edition will cost $29.99.

Disney says the disc, called Disney WOW (World of Wonder), will offer picture calibration tips for all types of sets, from flat-screens to projectors. It will also provide advice for both the notice and the most experienced audio/video enthusiast.

While nearly a majority of U.S. homes now have high-def sets, many consumers are still confused about how to best program the picture and/or which cables to use.

The Disney disc will include scenes from such Disney movies as Bolt and Pirates of the Caribbean to help consumers tune their sets so the picture is correct.

Disney made the announcement about the disc at this week's CEDIA Expo in Atlanta. The disc will be available at retail stores and online sites.

I like how they’ll include clips from actual movies so you have an idea of how the picture should look.

If it’s user friendly, I may have to give this a whirl. I’ll need to pick up a calibration disc after I get my equipment put in.

Strange. If a TV has poor calibration already, how would showing video clips of "how it should look" actually look correct in the first place as a reference?

I would imagine it gives u the info on how to tweak the settings and then u can use the video clips to see how the picture should look.

Obviously they aren’t gonna look right if you don’t adjust the settings 1st.

Roll your eyes all you want, smells like a Disney gimmick.

With all the television brands on the market, not all TV's calibrate exactly the same way, like any monitor. So unless they have profiles for every model, it seems rather useless. Visiting forums specific to my TV, there sure are so many opinions on calibrating my exact TV.

It's like a digital photo, sure you can apply "Auto Levels" in Photoshop, but each photo will have varying degrees of success as to the final output.

I’m not saying it’s the only calibration disc out there….b/c obviously it’s not.

I have one that is for regular tv’s and all it gave you were the shadow tests, the criss-cross patterns, and the color tests w/a piece of filament or whatever you wanted to call it that you had to look through for your hue’s.

It didn’t give you something to see after the calibration was done….so you had to assume you did it right.

Giving examples of what should or shouldn’t be in the picture is a great way of telling people they’ve done something right.

“you should be able to see XX in this scene…..in this location” and have an arrow pointing to the spot.

One of the most useful bits of info I’ve gotten on this site is when someone was talking about “crushing blacks.” And they gave a specific scene in a movie and gave a description of what 1 particular part of that scene should look like when paused.

Now, will it be like this….who knows. But I would assume you can see where I’m going w/this.

Well I could use a calibration disc, but I have a feeling this will just be an extension of the similar feature on Pixar discs except with clips. If it includes the How to Hook Up Your Home Theater short in HD I might get it.

I say it's about time. Disney is a major player on the field and IMO can be expected to put quality and ease of use into this item. I'm surprized they have never done this before. I look forward to the reviews. On another issue: I think the common buyer of hdtv will not buy the other calibration discs but when they see the Disney brand they may. And that may lead to less "burning" tvs in the world. That is a good thing.

I think the clips are to be viewed AFTER you have performed the calibration.

Think this is a huge waste of money. Most TV's these days comes with several pre-set viewing profiles, and besides I think we all just set up our TV to our own preferences. This should be a free feature with a disney BD.

Sounds like a disc for inexperienced users. Maby targeted for children or girls who would not think of calibrating their set without a disney mark on the disc. Well good if this helps someone.

Any Home theater person will tell you the preset color settings are usually trash on most TV's. The only thing they are really used for are selling units on the floor of a store. Colors are wayyy too saturated, bright/contrast is cranked all the way up to grab your attention. Good calibration discs work wonders to get the most out of your picture. Believe me

Yeah, I understand that. But how would you know it "worked" if you don't have an ideal picture to compare it to?

same could be said for ANY calibration disc then.

@ least disney is making an effort to make it user friendly....unlike some of the other products available.

lol @ even a calibration disc by Disney being expensive. These guys just won't cut consumers some slack and have some affordable pricing.
