Black Christmas. Though the slasher genre is itself just an offshoot of the Italian giallos, which started earlier...

Based on the formula of slasher films, I think that BLACK CHRISTMAS started it all...

I went with Psycho, but I agree with thecooldud. The Giallo films really started the slasher genre.

I went with Psycho as well. But Halloween is probably what made them really popular into the 80s.

If you look at the slasher formula, the only thing that makes Psycho a slasher is the fact the killer uses a sharp weapon. There's no final girl as such, no pov shots, no group of teens, no death after sex... Etc.

Psycho is a straight up horror film.

You can trace the origin back to Psycho or Peeping Tom, however I think Halloween kick started the genre or imitators such as Friday the 13th.

Having said that, there's a strong argument that Friday the 13th and its practically annual release of a new film popularised the formula and created the genre as we know it today.

The film buff in me wants to say either Psycho or Black Christmas, but it was indeed Halloween that kickstarted the craze that led to slashers becoming its own genre. All ya gotta do is look at the release timelines. After Halloween, the flood gates opened for imitators.

Why isn't "Thirteen Women" from 1932 an option? That'd get my vote in a heartbeat.

Halloween is given credit (in general) but I would vote for A Bay of Blood if it were on the list.
