Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits (TV Series)

Terry Gilliam is a cinematic genius, but he’s also a cinematic genius who wronged a sorcerer in a past life or something. His battles with movie studios are the stuff of legend. The movies that have literally fallen apart around him are too many to count. And then the internet went and falsely reported his death. If Gilliam’s own movies didn’t present a self-awareness about the absurdity of existence and cruel unfairness of life, it would be easy to fear for his sanity.

Could his salvation come via the small screen? We already knew he had a deal in place with Amazon, but now Gilliam has revealed that he’s working on a TV version of his 1981 comedic fantasy Time Bandits. Maybe things are finally looking up for the most cursed of filmmakers.

While participating in an online Q&A over at The Guardian to promote his new autobiography, Gilliamesque: A Pre-posthumous Memoir, Gilliam was asked about his future in television. After all, he recently signed a deal with Amazon that would allow him to resurrect projects like The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and The Defective Detective, both of which he’s struggled to bring to the screen for years. And while Gilliam’s answer mostly dwells on The Defective Detective (whose script is being expanded into a six-hour series), he does open with that Time Bandits news:

We are involved in two possibilities — one, a TV series based on Time Bandits, another based on a script by Richard LaGravanese and I wrote after Fisher King, called The Defective Detective. We’re currently adapting a two hour film into a six hour series. It’s about a middle aged New York cop who was once a hero who has grown fat and cynical and is in the middle of a breakdown, ending up in a child’s fantasy world where the rules of the mean streets of New York no longer apply. The best way to kill a dragon is no longer a gun, but a tree branch you think is a sword.

Hrmm. Charlene Yi, it seems. What stuff I have found just says that it was a guy on set with some sort of recognition/presence. Seems like it happened a while back too.

It said she left half way through. It wouldn’t surprise if she was written out of the show and her scenes deleted.

I know your post is old, but in retrospect, I'm actually glad that it's on Apple tv, because Apple tv has sort of become a sci-fi channel almost, with many of their series being sci-fi themed. There are of course many other genres on Apple tv, but they seem to be heavily investing in sci-fi, which I have zero objections to.

I think this Time Bandits series is more geared towards kids, as opposed to some of their other sci-fi series which are clearly geared towards adults.

I saw the original Time Bandits when I was a kid, so I'll be checking this one out too when it comes out.

The crew looks awful, and it's a crying shame as they had real dwarves in the trailer! Why aren't THEY the main team?

My oh my. I remember the original film and while it had its moments, I never cared for it overall. I was down with seeing someone retry this. But, it’s on Apple TV and it looks all wrong. Oh well.

Dwarves are apparently bad now, and should be discriminated against, according to certain people.

Didn't the same thing happen recently with Snow White and the 7 Dwarves? They even changed the title and got rid of any mention of Dwarves in it.

A lot of it was because of 1 actor, Peter Dinklage, who thinks that he represents all dwarves in the world, criticized Snow White.

Other dwarf actors have come out and criticized Peter Dinklage, saying that he doesn't speak for them.

I'm not a dwarf, but I can definitely understand those other actor's point of view, because the only thing that has happened is that there are now even less jobs for dwarf people in hollywood, since they are now not being cast and they are even being removed from remakes of classic movies.

I'm sure there's more than enough work for Peter Dinklage, the other dwarves, not so much I guess, especially not with certain people actively discriminating against them and not hiring them.

No, my comments were mostly relating to Snow White.

I try to avoid trailers, so I haven't seen the trailer for Time Bandits yet.

But, your comment makes me think that I might be missing something important, so I will watch it now.

I just saw the 2 minute trailer and I did see 3 dwarves in one scene.
