Very nice, just screened the Sony disc from my over a decade old digibook last night. Still looks great. I imagine this will most certainly get a new scan, seeing the existing 4k master is about 15 years old. Can't wait though, should look quite stunning.

I hope we get individual releases rather than just this random set.

If they are doing classic collections, why not a 4k set of all the Sony owned Frank Capra collection? You know, have the sets make sense.

Great news. I suspect it's that "newer" 4K master that was shown in theaters last year. The "old" 4K master hasn't aged that greatly to my eyes. Even using the same elements, a more modern scanning should benefit the UHD.

Is there really a market for such a random set as this?

Yeah, I certainly hope for individual releases. Of that collection I would only want Dr Strangelove, League of their own, and Jerry Maguire. I guess if that doesnt happen though I can always sell the ones I dont want.

I like most of those titles so I'd happily pick this up. Would've been nice to have Taxi Driver in there, but I guess they'll need that as a selling point to sell Volume 2.

Since the box is limited, and given the titles, I think individual releases are quite likely.

Even with this having the Criterion extras I couldn’t imagine selling the Criterion disc for how unique the packaging is.

Doesn’t Criterion own the rights to those bonus features? How can they be in this release?

The press release says 'Exclusively Available on 4K Disc in this Limited-Edition Set' so I think you will have to wait awhile for individual releases.

Yes, but Sony is also Criterion's US and UK distributor, so it works out for both parties. Criterion doesn't have to deal with the costs of putting out a UHD disc while their exclusive supplemental content is available on UHD.

I was thinking this would be a brilliant way to get Criterion UHDs - let the major studios foot the bill and just use their content.

Criterion seems to be willing to let the licensors and other distributors use their supplements.

More evidence that Criterion has no immediate plans to start releasing UHD discs.

I completely forgot about Sony’s relationship. My bad. But this deal was made in 2013. The Taxi Driver blu-ray came out on 2011 and had the Criterion Laserdisc commentary. What’s up with that?

They made a deal with Sony before that. The America Lost and Found box was originally started as a Sony project and it was moved to Criterion. Criterion has made deals with studios by trading commentaries and supplements for new titles, so it may have been that.
