(Jean Rollin, 1973, 80 mins)
Release date: 20 May 2025
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Joëlle Cœur (The Demoniacs) and Gilda Arancio (Tender and Perverse Emanuelle) star in Girls Without Shame (Jeunes filles impudiques), Jean Rollin’s first foray into the world of erotic cinema, made under the pseudonym ‘Michel Gentil’.

Two curious young women, Monica (Cœur) and Jackie (Arancio), find an abandoned old house whilst out hiking. Retiring to bed, they soon find that the house is a hangout for a criminal gang who suspect them of stealing their loot...

Restored in 4K from the original negative, Girls Without Shame (aka Schoolgirl Hitchhikers) features a score by regular Rollin composer Pierre Raph (Requiem for a Vampire) and supporting turns by Willy Braque (Lips of Blood) and Rollin himself, and sees the director successfully transfer his trademark images and themes to a new genre. This edition also includes a new restoration of Hubert Lacoudre’s rare 1972 short film Sexana, an erotic spin on Alice in Wonderland, also starring Cœur.

instead of having a AKA title, why didn't they just call it Schoolgirl Hitchhikers who have no shame....

Was this film ever released by Code Red or another boutique? I seem to recall buying a DVD of a similarly-titled film many years ago.

Like most of Rolin's catalogue, it's been around forever:

Hoping the next batch includes some Rollin HD debut.

Gotcha. I'm definitely thinking of a different film, then. Whatever Code Red released was not a Rollin film

You might be thinking of Schoolgirls in Chains.

While I was happy to have the film in my collection, the Jezebel/Kino disc left quite a bit to be desired in the video department. I'm hoping that Indicator will work its usual magic and provide a substantial upgrade. I know this film catches a fair amount of heat, but I've always had a soft spot for it and will be preordering ASAP. I've found these Rollin releases consistently impressive. I would love to see them give some of Franco's films the same treatment.

Looks like "The Iron Rose" is the companion release. Preordering that one now as well. This is the best news of the day, by far.

More excited for this than the Iron Rose.

So far the only Rollins 4Ks I have are for Shiver Of The Vampire and Two Orphan Vampires. I just put in an order for the remaining Rollins' Indicator films on 4K and threw in Black Magic Rites. Will be ordering Schoolgirl Hitchhikers and the other one, also.

Having now QCed the fully-authored disc, we're delighted to be able to confirm that it's a very substantial upgrade, and our restoration team has even managed to fix the juddering that blighted certain shots in previous releases.

Of course, there's no hiding the fact that it's ultimately a micro-budget and largely single-location film with some hilarious continuity flubs, such as a shot where Joëlle Coeur runs upstairs to wake Gilda Arancio, the cutaway to whom reveals that Coeur is still visibly lying in bed next to her (Schrodinger's Joëlle Coeur?), or the bizarre cut in which Coeur has her top fully on in one shot and virtually off in the next, despite ostensibly continuous action – but that adds to the entertainment value.

As to the title change, when we inspected the original 35mm materials we were fascinated to discover a set of credits under the title Girls Without Shame (which is much closer to Jeunes filles impudiques), and while we couldn't find any record of it ever being actually released under that title, that was clearly the original intention as they went to the expense of producing fully English-language credits in 35mm.

By contrast (and the disc will of course let you compare the two), in the more familiar English-language version the presumably US-based distributor crudely plonked a block-caps "SCHOOLGIRL HITCHHIKERS" into otherwise French-language credits, ignoring the fact that they don't hitch-hike at any point and they're obviously much too old to be schoolgirls (Coeur was definitely 25, and Arancio presumably similar). But that's sleazy Seventies exploitation film marketing for you.

The Indicator release from 2025, with UHD and Blu-ray options issued separately as usual in the U.S. and U.K., features a new 4K restoration that improves so radically in every possible way that this truly feels like a whole different film. The colors here are rich and vibrant especially with HDR10-compatible Dolby Vision on the UHD making it a really blazing viewing where even the various wallpaper choices are a tantalizing treat for the eyes. There's far more image info visible here as well, giving it a more balanced and spacious appearance, and finally no damage is sight anywhere. It's a truly miraculous stunner.

That's a quantum leap in quality. It makes the previous blu ray look like a vhs.
