I remember catching this on cable a few years ago. I thought the idea was interesting but the execution kind of eh. Maybe I'm due for another re-watch.

I keep getting pulled into it, for some reason.

I remember seeing it in the theater, and thought it was fun, but just kind of OK.

About 10 years later, it came out on laserdisc. I remembered liking it (I think more than I actually did) so I picked it up. Thought...ehhh...not as good as memory would have it.

About 15 years after that (long after I traded in the LD), the DVD came out. Wasn't planning on getting it, but then decided "why not". Same reaction as the first two times.

Didn't bother with the BD.

Starting to think about getting the UHD, and figuring I'm going to regret it.

I remember watching this at the drive in and being really bored by it. Being more familiar with the time period and sci-fi plot line by the time the blu came out I really liked it. The blu looks great and I'm very curious to find out if there really can be a night and day difference on top of it.

Blue Underground did a really nice job on the Final Countdown blu-ray release. With all that intricate detail aboard the USS Nimitz, distant shots of ship exteriors, overviews of flight deck operations, etc. UHD can really benefit from all that detail. What I enjoy most about 4K is being able to view imagery close up without obvious pixelation. It's there because it's digital imagery but not nearly as noticeable as 2K.

my thoughts exactly. still a good movie imo, I'm glad I blind bought it.

the movie doesn't do much with its concept, but sometimes simple is good

An underrated gem from 1980.

I had never owned The Final Countdown, not even on VHS, but earlier in the week I saw it mentioned on a WordPress blog, so I decided to look on Blu-ray.com if there was a Blu-ray edition. When I saw this 3-disc set (with the soundtrack album included!), I immediately ordered it on Amazon.

My copy arrived yesterday, and I decided to check out the "standard" Blu rather than the 4K, since the HD TV in the family room is bigger than my Samsung 4K TV and the couch there is more comfortable than my futon. Even allowing for the lower resolution of a 2K disc (compared, of course, to the 4K), The Final Countdown is not only a fun and interesting "ship and crew out of time" story, but a well-produced Blu-ray.

I'll probably watch the 4K disc today since it got such a good review on this site.

Obviously, it depends on your equipment, but the 4K UHD blows the Blu-ray away. I have the DVD, the original Blu-ray, and the UHD.

It’s a great little movie. Cool concept made with a lot of creativity and (of course) a great performance by Kirk Douglas. Interestingly, Lustig implied on the podcast that this is one of BU’s best-selling titles and every time they release it, it “pays for all his sins,” haha.

I really like Kirk in it a lot. He first comes across in the set up with a nod and wink that he knows this is schlock, but yeah, I'm going to have fun with it. Then proceeds to play it deftly serious, yet still nodding and winking all over the shop. The mans a heavyweight.

Which is basically how these labels have to operate. You use the 'populist' stuff to actually make money which then pays for all the smaller stuff that barely sell two dozen copies between them.

Such a shame even the mighty Criterion and Arrow can't/won't use this approach when it comes to 4K UHD, it's getting ridiculous now

Arrow is getting more hostility though for their HD Blu-ray pricing. They seem to live in an alternate dimension, pretending this UHD format doesn't exist.

For one disc? The Game is not the entire Arrow line up.

I'm in for this

This is one of those "I buy three copies of it." films. One to hold in each hand and one to watch. It's one of my guilty pleasures. I wish BU had made a 4K DCP available to screen at Alamo Drafthouse.

Still could happen! This one’s a ways off...waiting for Technicolor to open back up to get things moving with the restoration.
