The Coen brothers are partnering with Annapurna Television on The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, a Western anthology series, their first project for TV.


Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the scrip, will direct and produce the project through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Megan Ellison and Annapurna Television’s President of Television, Sue Naegle, will serve as Executive Producers. Annapurna intends to pursue an innovative television and theatrical integrated approach to the project.

Didn't like Hail, Caesar! at all, and I really disliked Bridge of Spies (only writing credit)...so I hope this show has a more true-to-form old school Coens vibe.

I enjoy most of the Coen Brothers stuff. I am surprised they are doing this though (they've mentioned in interviews several times how much they dislike tv) but I'll be checking this out

Like so many other esteemed filmmakers in recent years, Joel and Ethan Coen are making the move to television. The brothers are teaming up with Annapurna Television for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a limited series that they wrote and will direct. Intriguingly, this won’t be just a television series — the idea is that the entire project will be some combination of television and (theatrically released) film.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs marks the Coens’ first real push into television. Although the brothers are credited as executive producers on FX’s Fargo, which is based on their 1996 film, it’s really Noah Hawley’s show. The Coens will have a much more active role in developing and making The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which is based on an original concept that they came up with. The brothers have had great success with the Western genre in the past, helming the very good True Grit and the exceptional No Country for Old Men.

In addition to writing and directing, they’ll also produce through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle serve as executive producers.

Plot details on the Coen brothers TV show are being kept under wraps for now, but it’s described as an “event anthology” that will weave together six different storylines. Apparently, their idea was too big to be contained in a single feature film, so Annapurna is pursuing a combined TV / theatrical release. Exactly how the project will be broken up remains unclear. No distributor or release date has been announced yet.

Variety likens the Annapurna’s multi-platform approach for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs to the one Imagine Entertainment has planned for their adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, which will kick off this year with its first feature film. It also sounds a bit like Lionsgate’s plan for The Kingkiller Chronicle, which is being developed simultaneously for the big screen and the small screen.

The Coens last directed Hail, Caesar! and co-wrote the script for Suburbicon, George Clooney’s next movie as director. The Coens have not yet announced what their next film project will be.

It’s official.
The Coen Brothers are back in the Land of Enchantment.

The New Mexico Film Office confirmed on Wednesday that the feature-length series of Westerns, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” will film largely in the Santa Fe area.

The production is produced by Annapurna Pictures and the Oscar-winning Coen Brothers are directing.

“To have filmmakers with the distinction of the Coen Brothers return for a third time is a testament to the quality of our crews, our support services, our infrastructure, our communities and our significant work to let filmmakers know they’re welcome in New Mexico,” said Nick Maniatis, New Mexico Film Office director.

“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is a feature-length omnibus consisting of six separate stories, all Westerns.

The first of the six is about a singing cowboy and is the title story.

The second, “Near Algodones,” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving.

The third, “Meal Ticket,” follows an actor and impresario of a traveling show.

The fourth, “All Gold Canyon,” is about a prospector who happily finds a gold seam but then unhappily finds an evil encroacher.

The fifth, “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other.

Lastly, “The Mortal Remains,” about the five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination.

According the film office, principal photography will take place mid-July through the end of September.

The Coen Brothers are set to write and direct The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a Western anthology series, for premiere on Netflix in 2018.

The project, produced by Annapurna Television, will feature six tales about the American frontier told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen. Each chapter will feature a distinct story about the American West. It will star Tim Blake Nelson as Buster, and many others.

Oscar winners Joel and Ethan Coen will write and direct the anthology, as well as serve as executive producers. Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle from Annapurna Television will also serve as executive producers, along with longtime Coen Brothers collaborator Robert Graf. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an Annapurna Television production and will premiere in 2018.
