Though the third film in the series has not yet been formally announced by Netflix, the director of The Old Guard 2 had no problem sharing what she knows about the eventual trilogy-capper.
Quote:
How did you guys decide to end the movie on a cliffhanger? How much of a debate was that, and who is writing Old Guard 3?
MAHONEY: [Laughs] So I think that it's a team effort. That ending was a lot of discussion, a lot of people, a lot of conversations. There were nine producers on this movie. They all care about the movie. There are many discussions, and it really came down to, what do we want to feel at the end? So, what do we want to feel? Do we want to feel a sense of resolve? Do we want to feel a sense of hope? Do we want to feel a sense of pain? Do we want to feel a sense of wonderment? So I think that was the nexus point of, what do we want to feel? What do we want to feel? What do we want the audience to feel?
Then, I believe for all of them, in whatever they're going to do next, I believe they wanted to have an extended journey. So that was, I would imagine, part of the decision in a longer tale. I don't know anything about who's writing the next… I don't know who's directing. I don't know any of those things. I know that it will be fun and exciting, however it goes down, and I know that everyone will put their whole self into it.
