United Kingdom Martyrs 4K UHD (2008) Masters of Cinema (Limited Edition)

Martyrs 4K Blu-ray

Purchase: Eureka - Amazon.co.uk - HMV -
Release date: 27th October, 2025

Quote:

The rare film with a reputation that speaks for itself, Martyrs is perhaps the defining film of the New French Extremity movement and director Pascal Laugier’s masterpiece. Horrifying and thought-provoking in equal measure, it is a deeply philosophical and challenging work of extreme cinema – and undoubtedly one of the finest horror films produced in the twenty-first century.

In 1971, a young Lucie Jurin (Jessie Pham) manages to escape from a slaughterhouse in which she has been subjected to unspeakable torture. Placed in an orphanage, she forms a strong bond with Anna (Erika Scott), who tries to help her to recover from her trauma. Fifteen years later and now in adulthood, Lucie (Mylène Jampanoï) breaks into the isolated home of the Belford family, believing that they were involved in the horrific abuse she suffered in childhood. When she receives a call from Lucie, Anna (Morjana Alaoui) rushes to her aid – but soon comes to regret ever having set foot in the Belford house, where she will experience things beyond human comprehension.

Featuring heartbreaking performances by its two female leads and truly shocking imagery that lingers long in the mind courtesy of special effects designer Benoît Lestang, Martyrs has risen above debates surrounding “torture porn” to emerge as one of the truly great works of extreme cinema. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film on 4K UHD for the first time anywhere in the world from a stunning brand new 4K restoration, accompanied by a wealth of new and archival extras.

All depends on your ability to stomach some truly graphic violence and extreme gore and torture. I loved the first half of the movie before it went off the rails into what I can only call graphic torture-porn. Many think this is brilliant and started the birth of a new wave of extreme and visceral gore in films. The ending was far too depressing for me to even think of watching it again. For others, it is a masterpiece.

If you have seen other extreme French films, then you probably are fine. If this is your first foray into this genre, then you may want to find a way to view clips - mainly from the second half of the film - before you buy.

Just my 10 cents on things.*

* My 2 cents, adjusted for inflation and tariffs.

Trouble Every Day 4K is £34.99 and also comes with a BD. Main differences I can see between them is Martyrs comes with a 2-sided poster, while "Trouble.." had some facsimile lobby cards. The book for Martyrs is also bigger (100 vs 60 pages). It's possible Eureka just sees this as a bigger seller and raised the price to get more out of it. They also upped the quantity to 4,000 copies (Trouble had 3K).

Also, Trouble Every Day used an existing 4K restoration whereas this is a restoration by Eureka, so production costs were probably considerably higher.

Martyrs is one of those infamous horror titles of the 2000s that long kept a distance from me and I came close to importing either the UK blu or the very OOP Canadian blu, so i'm absolutely grabbing this 4K.

Yeah, I was going to point out what BillyBrown66 said - Eureka's TROUBLE EVERY DAY 4K release is the world UHD disc debut, but the 4K restoration itself had been completed for some time and already got an English-subtitled release here in the US from The Film Desk. MARTYRS, however, is from a brand new 4K restoration created by Eureka themselves, and so more money was put into it. I also think Lionsgate Limited will license Eureka's master and release here in the US, though I seriously doubt they'll outdo Eureka, especially if Eureka's release will have an FiM encode.

I would like this, but £40 is tough. I'm worried that there will not be a standard edition, though.

Nothing in the description states this is a single printing like TROUBLE EVERY DAY, so there might be.

Depends. Look at the Dark City situation with Arrow, where they dropped a disc from the standard edition without marking it as exclusive to the LE. Trouble Every Day only has a standard edition Blu-ray, so I'm concerned that there will not be standard edition 4K UHDs of either Trouble Every Day or Martyrs.
