Big news in PS3 land....its seems that 1080p/24, upscaled DVDs, YCrCb output and more will be supported in a future update along with tons of news in other areas:

Yeah, some really cool parts:

H.264 decoding itself was not very difficult for Cell with moderate optimization and they could play a movie in realtime at the first try unlike very difficult SACD optimization. However, because they began the development without knowing the final Blu-ray standard, they set the goal very high for decoding 2 full HD H.264 streams at 40Mbps simultaneously. Besides the clockspeed of the devkit was lower than the final product which made the development difficult. The current decoder can decode full HD H.264 with 3 SPEs.

Full rate H.264 (40Mbps) using less than half the computing power available. Aren't the Microsoft dev team saying the Xbox 360 is pushed to its limit for 30Mbps H.264?

Actually Kutaragi also ordered the development of the version with YCrCb internal processing at the final review. In the firmware version released in December it becomes possible for a user to choose RGB or YCrCb.

Going to YCrCb should allow passing BTB and WTW.

They also plan to use the non-original luminance information generated in upscaling for HDMI 1.3 deep color.

That's interesting. Deep colour 1080p DVD upscaling. Surely an easy firmware upgrade for the HD-A1/A2/Xbox add-on.

And,

SCE declared that they'd support 1080/24p in the PS3.

I'm already reading the firmware for XA2 rumours. No chance for the A2, I expect.

Why pay $1000 for 24p, when you can pay $500?

Retailers saying they are selling more BD players than HD DVD.

The PS/3 kicking all HD DVD players available or planned all around the room.

The Panasonic, Sony and Pioneer decks getting raves. The Sammy even recovering from the all out FUD war.

And the reviews for BD releases now matching and in some cases beating HD DVD.

You know, I don't expect for the PS3 to output 1080p24. Or simulated Deep Color. But decoding 2 full HD H.264 streams at 40Mbps simultaneously? Are you kidding me? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, when they showed the cell decoding 8 MPEG-2 HD video simultaneously two years before.

Was in Arizona for Thanksgiving,...to busy hooking up my folks up with software on their new 20in iMac and playing with it myself. Not to mention, fixing all my wife's relatives PCs with viruses, etc. I'm kinda the self nominated family IT guy for both sides of my family.

i have the same thing. i also do some computer consulting as a side gig. i have been ready to say that i charge a minimum and hourly rate since i actually do it to make money as well

I'm still under the impression that it can be made to happen with relatively little difficulty at some point.

From what I've read the original Japanese release output BD @ 720p and then removed it after the first firmware update for some reason.

At AVS they tell me it's better if my 720p display just takes the 1080i output and displays it @ 720p, but that's not how I understand HDMI and digital output to work. I always thought the less steps the better?

Today, "Impress PC watch" have carried an interview about future update plans about picture quality of Playstation 3.

According to this interview, SEC is planning at least four improvement at present.

First, YCrCb color output to be implemented next firmware update planned on December 8. Color accuracy and color range of BR will be improved by this update.

Next, SCE become go to start work for DVD upscaling. This will not to be 'simple upscaling', but aimig at being equal to the upscale processing with an upper-grade PC scaling software.

In addition, a work to convert a 1080/60i image to 1080/60p within internal PS3 process is planned. This is effective for playback of recorded BD-R/BD-RE.

Furthermore, it is confirmed that direct 1080/24p output through HDMI on BR movie titles to be implemented on future update.

Honestly, I wish these update is completed soon.
