Unfortunately coming from Capelight. Since I love this movie, the Showgirls treatment won't work for me with this one. So I'm afraid I'll have to pass, unless a brave soul confirms proper quality.

I'll probably give it a shot. If I remember correctly the 4K scan was already done a couple years ago in France. Not as familiar with the shortcomings of Capelight but one of my favorite films in either case.

Yeah, the French 4K remaster looks awesome going by caps, but I never bought it, because of the forced French subs. I recently did spot the new Japanese one, supposedly based on the same master, but was hoping for a 4K release by now.

And now, of all things, one is coming from Capelight. (they have subpar encoding and in case of Showgirls a very questionable HDR grade plus DNR, which wouldn't work for this movie at all)

Yyyyyyyeah not touching anything Capelight releases ever again. I’d grab it if Sony does it in the States, but I’m not sure this signals that is imminent.

I also don't think this indicates a Sony release at all. Sony never even released a proper BD and River also never was part of the polls. Me requesting it, will help as much as it helped Panic Room so far. Don't even know, if they still own this. If there was a Sony release, they might even have to use an inferior source anyway.

yeah the French BD looks great

forced subs are a non-thing on PC so shouldn't that not matter to you?

Yeah, but I primarily watch via player (both BD and 4K) and while even both Oppo and Panasonic should do the trick, I still try to avoid forced subs. In this case here, I was also hoping/waiting for a 4K. And since I don't re-watch movies all the time, there's no rush.

The French one is still an option though and I might eventually grab it over the Japanese one, if Capelight turns out to be "not very good".

French remaster was aired in Poland on Canal + 4K in HDR and it looks great, as one could assume.

We'll see how Capelight handles this movie, but hopefully it will be released in other countries by other companies. I would like a definitive release of a river runs through it.

Pathe owns the OCN and did the 4k scans a while ago, so unless Sony can also access them it may be a long wait for a US release. Pathe did the HDR grading work with Redford overseeing, as they did with Paul Verhoeven for the UHD grading of Showgirls.
